Description

The Probation Assistant positions working in the Pretrial unit are anticipated to have non-traditional work hours and may include weekends.

Probation Assistants are non-peace officer positions that support Probation staff, clients, and the public. They perform a variety of clerical, public relations, and manual tasks and services, which include:

  • Collecting and researching individuals' out of state/out of county criminal history by gathering information from law enforcement and other agencies
  • Verifying criminal history and defendant information for pretrial risk assessment and assisting with communication of assessment data to the Courts
  • Assisting with the set-up of electronic monitoring and alcohol detection equipment, as well as reviewing the subsequent reports and notifying officers of violations
  • Assisting defendants with enrollment in Court reminder and notification programs
  • Counseling clients on probation policies, procedures, and expectations
  • Co-facilitating delivery of curriculum to probation program participants
  • Assembling, ordering, and delivering supplies, materials, and equipment
  • Processing urine and buccal swab samples

Ideal candidates will have strong written and oral communication skills, an ability to work collaboratively with all levels of staff, and possess experience:

  • Working with difficult client populations
  • Conducting interviews and intake with clients/defendants
  • Collaborating and communicating with multiple agencies
  • Co-teaching and/or co-facilitating groups
  • Researching and collecting data
  • Performing clerical duties, involving public contact and customer service
  • Explaining policies and/or procedures

EXTRA-HELP EMPLOYMENT

Extra-help employees relieve or augment permanent staff. Intermittent, extra-help employees are not in the classified civil service and do not have property rights to permanently allocated positions. In addition, they do not receive most regular employee benefits such as: long-term disability insurance coverage; accrual of vacation; participation in the County retirement program; or eligibility to take promotional examinations. Intermittent, extra-help employees are limited in their employment to a maximum of 1,380 hours within any twelve month consecutive period. Extra-help employees who meet the eligibility requirements may qualify for a County contribution toward medical coverage.
