TITLE: Ventilation and Filtration Technician

PURPOSE OF POSITION: 

  • Responsible for overseeing, maintaining, and improving air ventilation and filtration functions on Iowa Select Farms production sites.
  • Develop improvements in production throughput, efficiencies, and operating costs through innovation, new technologies, and research and development.  

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Be responsible for ventilation operation and filtration upkeep at sites as assigned. Including but not limited to:
    • Address any maintenance issues that arise with the PP ventilation system. These could be electrical, mechanical, structural, or control problems that require troubleshooting and repair.
    • Utilize online ticket system to manage work orders, order supplies, and create records of solutions found so that farm and system trends can be identified.
    • Work with farm staff on day-to-day troubleshooting, questions, and issues. 
    • Implement and communicate on ventilation system changes needed due to wind, temperature, season, etc.
    • Work with each farm/vet/supervisor to ensure regular filter and dormer inspections are performed and any issues addressed
    • Regular filter sampling and testing for efficiency and airflow
    • Supervise and inspect filter replacements/installations
  • Assist in training farm staff, supervisors, and maintenance personnel on ventilation system, controllers, and filter/dormer inspections.
  • Identify improvements to the ventilation and filtration system to reduce operating costs, improve efficiencies, or improve animal throughput and implement company wide.
  • Work closely with site managers and production supervisors to ensure PPF system performance and address any issues or concerns that arise during system operation.
  • Develop system performance evaluation methodology (e.g. leak checks, filter performance testing/replacement, etc.) and coordinate with team to ensure continued optimal performance of ventilation and filtration system.
  • Identify potential improvements that could increase throughput, decrease cost, increase efficiency, or protect the company. Work with team on investigating, determining potential ROI, field-testing, and then implementation. Improvements could be new technologies, processes, materials, methods, etc
  • This person must be able to work with limited or no supervision, so they must have initiative, organization, dependability, and be self-motivated.  
  • Demeanor should be positive and professional at all times.
  • Be friendly, positive, helpful, team-oriented and respectful to co-workers and management team.
  • Attendance is critical. Be at work on scheduled days and be ready to walk into barns by start time given.
  • Flexibility in hours during health and staffing challenges is required.
  • Be available to work in an on-call status for weekend emergency needs.
  • Shower in and out of facilities to complete tasks.
  • Good communication skills are critical to ensure timely and efficient identifying and addressing of issues. 
  • This person will also need basic computer and smart phone skills.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This environment of this position will change daily pending weekly schedule.
  • This position will have duties in all facilities of Iowa Select Farms so employee will need to be comfortable working in and being exposed to all facility environments.
  • This position may require some tasks to be performed in outside weather conditions.
  • The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.
  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibrations.  
  • The environment you will be working will have nuisance levels of gasses and dust, particularly in the winter months 
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

 

PHYSICALITY REQUIREMENTS

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb ladders; balance; stoop, bend, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear.  
  • Ability to frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds along with climbing up ladders or over gates.          
  • The employee must have the ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
  • Ability to drive a vehicle for prolonged periods of time.

 

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

  • This is a full-time position that will require a minimum of 40 hours per week 
  • Expected days and hours of operation include day-shift hours Monday-Fridays and a rotating weekend on-call schedule
  • Occasional evening hours and weekend work may be required as job duties demand
  • Additional availability may be required during staffing challenges 

 

TRAVEL

  • Regular in-state travel will be required for this position which entails the utilization of a company vehicle.

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and OTHER QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Experience in and knowledge of swine facilities is a bonus.
  • Mechanical mindedness is a necessity. 
  • Must demonstrate knowledge in general construction methods and/or repairs and maintenance. 
  • Must have a thorough understanding of electrical concepts and must have complete knowledge and ability to run a volt-meter.
