Job Summary:

The Imaging Manager is responsible for managing the daily operations of the Imaging Department that may include diagnostic radiography, fluoroscopy, mammography, ultrasound, computed tomography, nuclear medicine, magnetic resonance imaging services and/or teleradiography. The management is performed in accordance with established medical center and departmental policies and procedures, Medicare, Medicaid, Nuclear Regulatory, OSHA, the Hawaii Revised Statutes Imaging regulations, union contracts, the Joint Commission standards, and other governing regulations. In addition, this position may be assigned to perform assignments in related imaging modalities for which they are qualified and competent. Supervises assigned staff.


Essential Responsibilities:

  • Work Unit Management & Administrative Activities

  • Plans, organizes, and directs the daily operations of the Imaging Section and ensures that the services are timely, progressive, and provided with a high level of quality.

  • Assists in the staffing of the Imaging Section to ensure adequate staffing levels with competent personnel to meet the needs of the services.

  • Consults with the Director of Imaging on a regular basis regarding the direction and problems relating to section operations. Recommends changes in Imaging policies to carry out objectives of the department more effectively.

  • Regularly meets with other section supervisors/leads to plan, organize, and coordinate the operations of the Imaging Department to provide optimal and progressive services.

  • Ensures compliance with all policies, procedures, regulations, and standards that apply to the functioning of the Imaging Section.

  • Assist with preparation of department budget and controls the expenditures of the section by analyzing costs, obtaining competitive bids and evaluating less expensive alternatives in accordance with State and Corporate policies and guidelines.

  • Assists the Director of Imaging in overseeing the Quality Improvement Program for the Imaging Department and directs change in the Departments operating procedures as necessary to continually provide quality, timely, and progressive imaging services for both the inpatient and the outpatient programs.

  • Recommends improvements of the physical structure and equipment in the section to continually provide quality, timely, and progressive imaging services for both the inpatient and outpatient programs.

  • Assists in overseeing the safety program of the Department. Ensures safety by making prompt, necessary changes to the operations in the areas of safety and writes repair requisitions/orders for equipment and the physical structure of the section.

  • Assists in the collaboration with other hospital department managers to analyze and implement changes in operational procedures to effect greater quality of hospital services.


  • Supervisory Activities

  • Supervises assigned staff in order to provide quality, progressive, and timely imaging services.

  • Coordinates the review of the qualified applicants, the interview, and recommends the best-qualified person(s) for appointment within the department.

  • Orients new employees in the department specific policies and procedures. Provides staff with on-the-job training and coordinates with others to provide continuing education classes.

  • Establishes work performance standards for various positions in the Imaging section.

  • Performs timely performance appraisals and competency assessments.

  • Reviews, investigates and assists in resolving personnel problems using collective bargaining provisions and State/Corporate personnel rules and regulations. Takes appropriate disciplinary actions in consultation with immediate supervisor.

  • Assists in the preparation of position job descriptions for all department positions.

  • Initiates the preparation of documents for personnel actions (i.e., transfers, extensions, recruitment, etc.).

  • Conducts regular Department meetings to convey and update information concerning the Hospital/Department issues, policies and procedures, and Department concerns or problems for quality assurance and improvement.

  • Prepares the work schedules and assignments for the personnel in this section. Coordinates the schedules and assignments with other members of department management to ensure adequate coverage of all sections. Approves or disapproves any alterations in the work schedules and any overtime to be incurred. Assigns or reassigns work as needed.


  • Technical Activities

  • Demonstrates abilities using RIS/PACS which includes but not limited to sending and retrieving data, document scanning, correct order entry, billing and correction of data errors. Requires knowledge of downtime procedures and can instruct staff on manual processes.


  • Other Duties

  • Adhere to patient safety/infection control policies and procedures, hospital rules and regulations, policies and procedures, professional code of ethics, regulatory agency guidelines and requirements, and accreditation standards.

  • Maintains professional and cordial relationship with patients, staff members, medical staff, etc.

  • Maintains competencies through continuing education and credentialing, in-services and/or unit/hospital competencies within appropriate time frame.

  • Uses the principles of growth and development to assess each patients age-specific needs and provide age- specific treatment and care.

  • Uses the principles of pain management in assisting each patient to be as comfortable and pain-free as possible by assessing, treating and educating patient and family.

  • Uses knowledge of different cultures to assess each patients culturally specific needs and provide culturally specific treatment and care.


Basic Qualifications: Experience

  • Minimum one and a half (1.5) years of progressively responsible professional imaging technologist/specialist experience which demonstrated a thorough knowledge of imaging procedures and/or techniques such as myelograms, discograms, arthrograms, etc., including the X-raying of such areas of the human anatomy as the chest, skull, gastro-intestinal tract, urinary tract, and vascular system.
