Job Summary


Creates and successfully implements World Class Hawaiian Culture-Based Education (WCHCBE) strategies and practices at the school level in alignment with E Ola! learner outcomes.  Provides leadership and assistance to ensure learning experiences are grounded in Hawaiian Culture-Based Education best practices. Ensures the development and successful execution of programs that will result in culturally grounded teaching, learning and leadership across school levels. Utilizes an integrated approach to address the four focus areas of the KS Hawaiian Culture-Based Education Framework (HCBE):

Kulia I ka nu'u – teaching, learning, and leadership practice that is culturally grounded; strengthening the aspirations of each learner; transformative curriculum that combines indigenous curricula from traditional Eurocentric perspectives and founded upon indigenous or local language and culture.

Ma ka hana ka 'ike – well-designed learning environments that support effective HCBE

Ka 'ike a ka Makua he hei na ke keiki – engagement of families in the teaching and learning process in ways that reinforce their understanding and appreciation of the values, beliefs, and principles that undergird a HCBE education at home and in their communities.

'O Hawai'i ku'u kulaiwi – Devotion to our Native homeland, Hawai'i, as expressed through acts of aloha 'aina-Hawaiian patriotism – and engagement of learners of all ages in social, cultural and political experiences

Supports the development and implementation of strategies to integrate WCHCBE into the curriculum, instruction and assessment practices.  Serves the school's leadership team as a resource in Hawaiian culture, protocol, practices, and customs.

In alignment with the PK-12 curricular framework, assists with planning, designing and implementation for the integration of the KS Cultural Principles of Hawaiian Identity, Hawaiian Culture-Based Education (HCBE) Framework and E Ola! Leaner Outcomes into the curriculum and learning environment.

Essential Responsibilities

Development and Implementation

  • In alignment with the PK-12 WCHCBE framework, designs and facilitates professional learning opportunities to for the school's faculty and staff to enhance teaching, learning and leadership that are culturally grounded to achieve E Ola! Learner Outcomes. 

  • Works directly with faculty, staff and administration to support the development and implementation of WCHCBE into all facets of the school's student experience, both inside and outside the classroom. This includes working with teachers in the classroom to ensure successful infusion of Hawaiian cultural principles, 'ike (knowledge), and experiential programs into the curriculum and learning experiences.

  • Continually reviews WCHCBE strategies implemented to ensure that E Ola! learner outcomes are being achieved. Provides direct support to faculty, staff and administration to continually implement strategies that develop an innovative Hawaiian learning environment.

  • Provides direct opportunities to support engagement of 'ohana and community members in ways that encourage and promote the relevance and importance of a Hawaiian Cultural Based Education for our learners and a deeper understanding of the Hawaiian culture and values.

  • Provides expertise in the development of experiential programs and special events that will provide culturally rich, meaningful and relevant experiences for our learners and lead to the achievement of E Ola! learner outcomes.

  • Serves the school's leadership team as a resource in Hawaiian culture and language, protocol, practices, and customs. 

  • Designs and develops cultural resources and material that support instruction and assessment and 'ohana engagement.

Data Analysis, Research and Assessment

  • Collaboratively works with the school's leadership team in the review and analyze of data to assess whether E Ola! learner outcomes are being achieved.
  • Collects, analyzes, and interprets data/results using multiple sources of relevant HCBE data for the school.
  • Assists faculty with the design and analysis of performance assessments and displays of learning related to HCBE and the demonstration of E Ola! Learner Outcomes.

Collaborations, System Integration and Alignment

  • Provides direct support to faculty, staff, and administration in the systematic integration of world class HCBE into the school's curriculum, instruction, and assessment needs that are in alignment with the KS HCBE Framework, and school goals.

  • Works with school leadership and other KS cultural resources to ensure alignment with the organizational goals and the development of an aligned framework for WCHCBE.

  • Assesses the quality and effectiveness of HCBE instructional strategies.    

Professional Development

  • Leads the planning for relevant school level professional development, with focus on EOla! Learner Outcomes, the implementation of the WCHCBE curriculum and the integration of WCHCBE into the education program across the school to ensure:  1) that the highest level of HCBE instructional strategies are used; 2) that teachers have access to in-service and training and resources.
  • Assists with the planning and execution of HCBE Professional Development for all faculty, staff, and leadership through various professional learning opportunities and experiences.

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.

  • Masters Degree in Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or closely related field.
  • Proficiency in 'Olelo Hawai'i
  • Extensive knowledge of Hawaiian history, culture, and language.
  • Minimum of 5 years of classroom teaching experience.
  • Knowledge of current theories and practices in PK-12 curriculum instructional methodology (across all disciplinary areas), child development and staff development.
  • Ability to guide and support the integration Hawaiian culture-based education with education best practices into curriculum, instruction and assessment.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret and present data to a wide range of audiences including administrators, teachers and general staff.
  • Initiative and ability to function independently to facilitate professional and curriculum development (identifying needs, having breadth of professional knowledge and networking to select appropriate development activities, integrating new learning with current curriculum).
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a team environment; prioritize projects and lead working groups; plan, coordinate, and execute on multiple assignments.
  • Conflict resolution skills to work effectively with staff, teachers, and administrators.
  • Excellent critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills to actively listen, analyze, synthesize, find creative solutions, and share ideas both in oral and written form.
  • Ability to use standard computer applications to include word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, email/calendaring.
  • Ability to engage resources (both internal and external) to forge relationships between KS and such resources.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the design and development of curricula and educational material and resources.
  • Experience in the design and development of Hawaiian culture learning resources and material.

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.
  • Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully

Working Conditions (including Environmental Conditions)

  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.
  • Work is conducted in an office/school environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours but evening and weekend hours are often required to meet goals and objectives

Based on the compensation range provided below, salaries are commensurate with job-related experience, skills and competencies, education, internal equity, length of work year, and other organizational needs.
