The purpose of this job is to provide Electrical Design Engineering services.
A Senior Electrical Designer is a member of a global capital project design team that is made up of members from several different engineering disciplines including Civil, Piping, Mechanical, Instrumentation, and Process Automation. The Senior Electrical Designer applies applicable design criteria, design tools, best practices, and established work processes when creating the documentation required for the selection, purchase, and installation of electrical equipment in new or existing  process plants.
A Senior Electrical Designer provides expertise for the completion of capital and maintenance projects in the electrical engineering discipline in order to ensure safe, economical, constructible and maintainable designs.

  • Technical:  Has a thorough knowledge and understanding of national and local electrical codes and standards, electrical calculations, electrical equipment, and electrical equipment control.
  • Computer Aided Engineering and Drawing (CAE/CAD): Has a high competence level in MicroStation and PlantView and an intermediate level of competence in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Organizational:  Has the ability to create complex detailed design drawings and documentation used for construction bid packages and for inquiring/ordering electrical equipment.
  • Personal: Must be able to work with and get along with others with diverse backgrounds. Must be able to exchange ideas and information one-on-one and in a group.

Education Requirements:
  • Associates degree in Electrical Technology or equivalent working experience

Responsibilities for this role include the following:
  • Support development of scope, estimate, schedule, design strategy and resource manhrs on electrical projects.
  • Acts as electrical lead back-up responsible for various aspects of multi-discipline projects.
  • Designs electrical systems that are safe, reliable, and maintainable in accordance with company standards and work processes. Systems will include both new installations and modernization of existing facilities.
  • Coordinates the activities of drafters to accomplish electrical design of projects.
  • Uses CAE/CAD tools to create complex detailed design drawings and documentation used for construction bid packages and for inquiring/ordering electrical equipment.
  • Provide support to other electrical designers when assistance is required on micro station, S3D, and other CAE tools.
  • Exchanges technical information with peers, other engineering disciplines, and suppliers.
  • Evaluates company design standards for correctness, applicability, and relevance to particular electrical installations. Submits Management of Change (MOC) documents to correct existing design standards or to create new ones.
  • Provides engineering field support on construction projects when requested by the Owner's Representative or plant.
  • Superior skills in electrical design and bid package development using CAD and CAE tools.
  • Has the ability to plan and organize work effectively while working on several projects simultaneously.
  • Has knowledge and understanding of electrical calculations, electrical equipment, and electrical equipment control.
  • Have effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Work with electrical equipment suppliers to create the electrical order specifications.
  • Track and report physical progress on the creation of electrical design deliverables for the project.
  • Work with supplier drawings and documentation to verify accuracy and incorporate into design.
  • Has the ability to independently perform electrical design functions in the following area:
    • Power distribution <1000V (overhead, underground and open wire)
    • Power distribution <15kV (Switchgear, MCCs, Transformers)
    • Protective Relay and Controls Schematics
    • Protective Relay Communication & Architecture
    • Distribution equipment (other than switchgear) selection and sizing
    • Schematic development and design
    • Equipment specifications and procurement
    • Electrical power (load) and short circuit calculations
    • Electrical switchroom design and layout
    • Fuse coordination
    • Has the ability to understand and use many different types of engineering documentation, including but not limited to:
      • P&IDs (Piping and Instrument Diagrams)
      • Electrical one line and three line diagrams
      • Electrical wiring, schematics, and interconnection diagrams
      • Equipment location plans and electrical hazardous area classification plans
      • Piping isometrics and heat tracing installation drawings
      • Electrical equipment installation instructions provided by suppliers
      • Equipment lists, load lists, and cable schedules
    • Has knowledge and understanding of electrical equipment and the various parameters which affect their application and installation, including but not limited to:
      • Power and control transformers
      • Power distribution equipment (switchgear, MCCs, motor controllers)
      • Wire, cable, conduit, raceways, cable tray
      • 5kV and below induction motors
      • Power electronics and variable speed drives
      • Lighting and communications
      • Fuses

Required experiences and skills:
  • 8 to 12 years of electrical design experience in power on capital projects.
  • Strong initiative and team leadership capabilities.
  • Strong interpersonal relationship and time-management skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Physical effort is required.
    • Must be able to do fieldwork in an operating chemical plant, which includes taking field measurements and climbing stairs and ladders.
  • Ability to work in a petrochemical environment where hard hat, fire retardant clothing, hearing protection, and eye protection will be required for field work.
  • National Electrical Code.
  • Electrical equipment sizing and selection.

Recommended proficiency with the following:
  • MS Office Applications (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).

Location and Travel Requirements:
  • This position is located in Houston, TX
  • Occasional travel is necessary (mainly domestic); however, some international travel may be required.
