Job Summary

Under the direction of the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) Manager, the Sterile Processing Supervisor monitors daily operations in the SPD department, ensuring that technicians are trained in and abide by all departmental policies and procedures. Conducts and coordinates job-specific training of employees. Performs in-services. Coordinates resources. Monitors productivity and quality of product of individual employees and of an assigned shift. Conducts performance evaluations for all employees under their direct supervision. Creates employee schedules and monitors time cards and attendance. Performs corrective action. Performs Q/A on employee performance. Orders supplies and assists SPD Manager with budget monitoring. Participates with SPD Manager in planning for future needs and project implementation related to personnel, program development, instrument and equipment, interdepartmental relationships, and department goals. Assists SPD Manager with hiring. Assesses and troubleshoots safety, instrument, and equipment issues. Establishes and maintains professional rapport with medical, nursing, and other staff. Performs the duties of a SPD Technician as required. Assumes responsibilities for department as a whole in the absence of the SPD Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent
Minimum Years of Experience: 3 Years of previous Sterile Processing Experience
Substitutable Education & Experience (Optional): None
Required Certifications/Licensure: Current Technician level certification from IAHCSMM (CRCST) or CBSPD (CSPDT)
Required Training: Previous supervisory experience or proven leadership abilities (Ability to communicate with nursing, technical, and medical staff using both verbal and written communication methods);
Detailed knowledge of department policies and procedures and outside regulatory requirements;
Knowledge of computer systems including basic computer knowledge, MS Office, databases, and inventory management systems;
Ability to operate complex machinery including washers, ultrasonic cleaners, and sterilizers;
Knowledge of medical terminology.

Essential Functions
  • Monitor daily operations of and assume responsibility for assigned shift in the Sterile Processing Department.
  • Coordinate staffing, equipment, instrument, and supply resources to ensure effective and efficient department workflow between and within shifts. 
  • Create schedules and coordinate daily assignments of SPD technicians ensuring the duties of all assignments are accounted for and that technicians are rotated according to department needs, training, and competency requirements.
  • Monitor productivity and quality of product of individuals and of shifts utilizing proactive observational and hand-on approaches. Monitor time cards and attendance of assigned employees.
  • Conduct and coordinate job-specific and department-specific training of assigned technicians.
  • Perform in-services and ensure that technicians maintain competency requirements.
  • Ensure employees are informed and competent with department and hospital policies and procedures.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assist department educator with ensuring that assigned employees are compliant with annual training requirements through notification of employees, schedule coordination, and participation in department and hospital training.
  • Monitor employee compliance with job duties and expectations.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and corrective actions according to established legal, union, hospital, and department standards.
  • Continuously monitor and communicate with employees regarding these expectations.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
