General Summary of Position
The Director of Clinical Nursing Informatics promotes exemplary nursing informatics practice that is evidence based and is informed by nursing practice and clinical informatics standards. The incumbent collaborates with other MedStar System Clinical Nursing Informatics and Information System leaders in providing leadership in the organization's ongoing assessment, evaluation, planning, development, implementation, education and performance improvement for clinical information system processes, clinical workflows, and integration for the Department of Nursing for the entity, and the MSH system. The Director incorporates the organization's strategic objectives for patient care in the management and evaluation of MSH clinical information systems and point of care clinical technologies and directs the management of clinical systems to meet the standards of the entity and health system. The incumbent will utilize their knowledge and skills of clinical practice to determine clinical functions that are suitable for computer application and to ensure that Clinical Information Systems are consistent with professional standards of clinical practice, including the Joint Commission and other related standards and regulatory requirements. The Director works across Medstar clinical information system platforms to ensure patient safety and quality of patient care through on line documentation, integration, data analytics, and improved workflow efficiencies. The Director is recognized as a professional role model and promotes an environment that supports the goals, mission, vision, philosophy and values of the entity Department of Nursing and of MedStar Health. The Director of Clinical Nursing Informatics reports directly to the MSH Vice President, Chief Nursing Information Officer and has a matrix reporting structure to their entity(ies) Chief Nursing Officer(s) or delegate. The Director of Clinical Nursing Informatics has accountability for entity-specific clinical nursing informaticists, and any administrative personnel supporting the department.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- Master's degree in Nursing Informatics, Informatics, Computer Science, required or
- acceptable equivalent is required from a nationally accredited program. required and
- Doctoral degree A Doctor of Nursing Practice degree preferred or
- Advanced Nursing Informatics degree/certificate from an accredited program preferred
Experience
- 5-7 years Progressively more responsible job-related experience, including at least 2 years of leadership and/or managerial experience. required and
- Experience with implementation of clinical systems and/or project management of clinical systems preferred
Licenses and Certifications
- RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Licensed as a registered nurse in the entity's(ies) locale. required and
- RN-BC - Informatics Nurse (RN-BCINFO) National informatics within 1 Year preferred or
- nursing informatics certification within 1 Year preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to exercise independent judgment. Demonstrated business acumen and leadership skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively interact with all levels of management, internal departments and external agencies. Working knowledge of project management, clinical software applications, data analytics, and applied clinical/informatics research.
- In collaboration with multiple system disciplines, the work requires identifying and resolving complex problems and assembling extensive cross-functional knowledge of MedStar Health Clinical Information Systems and associated point of care and biomedical devices.
- Work assignments are generally received via system goals, hospital, departmental, specialty committee, or MSH IS clinical project or nursing council goals. All work outputs require exquisite attention to detail, application of clinical judgment, and interpretation or creation of policies, procedures, and developing appropriate courses of action.
