Job Summary: 
MedStar Health is looking for a Patient Care Technician Perioperative Services to join our team!  
The Patient Care Technician Perioperative Services plays a vital role in assisting the surgical team, ensuring patient safety, and maintaining a clean and organized environment. Provides direct patient care in Preop, Operating Room and PACU, supporting surgical procedures, and collaborating with the surgical team to ensure smooth operations.

Primary Duties: 
Performs duties related to patient-specific needs for the ORs as directed by Physician, Nurse, Surgical Assistant Technologist/Technician. including a) Assisting with transport and safe transfer of patients on/off O.R. table, b) Application of SCD sleeves. c) Retrieving medications from satellite pharmacy, d) Checking case carts for completion, e) Working with the lead nurse(s) to ensure supplies are available, f) Retrieving and assisting staff with positioning devices, equipment, and/or supplies, g) Assisting with transport of blood and blood products, and other items in a safe manner. h) During turnover, assist with transport of completed case carts. i) Assist with room turnover and set-up cases. j) Complete point of care testing. k) Preparing and maintaining the operating room before, during, and after surgical procedures. l) Assisting patients with pre-operative preparations, including positioning. m) Adhering to strict infection control protocols and maintaining a sterile environment in the operating room. n) Assisting in open sterile items for procedures]. o) Ensuring the availability and proper functioning of equipment and supplies required for surgical procedures. p) Cleaning and/or disposition of equipment. q) Assisting with patient transfer to recovery rooms or other designated areas. r) Responding promptly to emergent situations and following established protocols. s) Picking up instruments from SPD or taking Rapid Turnovers down. 
Performs the following procedures as directed: a) blood glucose monitoring utilizing a glucometer b) phlebotomy (patient blood draws) c) IV/PRN adapter insertion d) Discontinuance of foley catheters e) simple dressing changes f) starts/manages IV during surgical procedures g) assists physician in examinations/procedures. h) collects laboratory specimens and sends them to the laboratory. Monitors/takes vital signs and records them in the patient chart. Monitors and responds to patient's call light, assisting patient directly or referring the need to a more appropriate staff member.  
Reports observations/changes in patient status to the appropriate personnel according to protocol. Prepares patient to be seen by Physician/providers. Assists Physician in examinations/procedures. May clean and prepare procedure room(s) between patients. Assists patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADL's). 
Maintains the cleanliness and safety of patient rooms/environment. Transports and/or escorts patients during discharges, transfers, and/or medical appointments. Completes errands such as delivering specimens to the laboratory. 
Receives and stocks equipment and supplies and maintains orderly supply and utility rooms. Attends staff meetings, ongoing educational offerings, and participate in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams. 

Qualifications: 
High School Diploma or GED. 
Completion of a nursing assistant certification program; or national Registered Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic program/course with 6+ months experience as an EMT, CCT, or EMTP; or Nursing Student (RN) with completion of at least one year of clinical rotation, or graduate of an approved nursing program (LPN/RN). 
CNA - Certified Nursing Assistant in the District of Columbia. 
CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) within 90 Days. 
CPT - Phlebotomy Technician Certification preferred. 
General health care experience in acute care, long-term care or other settings preferred.
