General Summary of Position
Assists in the supervision and direction of the daily activities for the practice-based Vascular Lab. Performs vascular testing procedures, assists with scheduling prepares vascular lab billing, and manages clinical research projects, and vascular lab supply/equipment maintenance. Assists in the implementation of protocols and procedures and participate in the ongoing Performance Improvement program.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains established department goals, objectives, policies, and procedures, quality and safety standards. Ensures compliance with hospital/facility policies and procedures, and governmental and accreditation regulations. Coordinates process and documents required to maintain accreditation for the site(s).
  • Acts as liaison with physicians to ensure satisfaction with test competence and scheduling.
  • Adheres to departmental Safety and Infection Control programs. Cleans disinfects, and maintains Vascular Lab equipment as per department protocol. Reports patient or associate injuries as per established protocol. Demonstrates compliance with Universal Precautions when appropriate.
  • Assists in the selection of new equipment including vendor selection, purchasing, receiving, storage, and utilization of equipment, materials, and supplies. Recommends department operating budget as it pertains to the practice-based vascular lab. Ensures vascular lab operates within budget at multiple sites.
  • Completes all related clerical procedures. Ensures completeness of required patient data prior to billing and interpretation. Adequately completes all department and MedStar Health billing requirements in a timely manner. Maintains statistics as required. Adequately documents all patient and test information.
  • Completes all related procedures prior to performance of test procedure. Assists with the planning, coordination, and scheduling of all vascular testing procedures in a timely manner. Assists in maintaining internal and external Vascular Lab supply Inventories. Clarifies testing requests in ambiguous situations. Communicates information about the specific test(s) to the patient and/or family explaining the procedure prior to testing.
  • Completes all requirements for lab accreditation and succeeding reaccreditation. Participates in CME courses relevant to vascular testing modalities and obtains a minimum of 30 hours every three years. Monitors compliance with departmental report interpretation protocols.
  • Consistently performs technically adequate vascular testing procedures. Performs vascular-related patient history and physical examination prior to testing. Obtains and records optimal grayscale and color flow images). Obtains and records optimal Doppler signals, measurements, and calculations. Identifies and documents appropriate data/information during testing procedures. During the test procedure, identifies and documents vascular abnormalities related to the patient's symptoms and/or diagnosis. Immediately notifies the physician/Vascular Surgeon of any serious abnormalities identified during the procedure.
  • May participate in the development and performance of clinical trials and designs. Reviews, updates, and writes technical protocols for studies performed in areas of responsibility. Introduces and demonstrates new techniques, equipment, and research findings to the staff.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts as required.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Recommends and assists in the Performance Improvement Process for the practice-based Vascular Lab. Assists in the selection process of new staff. Directs and participates in orientation and training for new staff consistent with experience/skill level. Directs training, educational activities, and provides supervision for trainees, students, and other hospital departments. Assists with the performance appraisal process for all practice-based Vascular Lab staff. Assists in the development and implementation of department policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Schedules adequate staff coverage to ensure the completion of tests in a timely manner.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Graduation from accredited ultrasound program required or
    • 12 months experience in vascular testing procedures required
    • Associate's degree in allied health field preferred

    Experience

    • 1-2 years Experience in vascular testing procedures or no experience required for graduates of an accredited ultrasound program required

    Licenses and Certifications

    • ARDMS - Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonography ARDMS (American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers) registration or registry-eligible in Vascular Technology, or RVS (Registered Vascular Specialist) from Cardiovascular Credentialing International required or
    • RVS - Registered Vascular Sonographer ARDMS (American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers) registration or registry-eligible in Vascular Technology, or RVS (Registered Vascular Specialist) from Cardiovascular Credentialing International required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Good mathematical and organizational skills.
    • Ability to recognize emergency medical situations.
    • Verbal and written communication skills.
    • Basic computer skills preferred.
