Chief of Anesthesia
Responsible for system clinical leadership, strategic and operational direction and administration and management of employed provider operations in Piedmont Healthcare & Physician Enterprise. Where appropriate and needed, supports the systemwide development and implementation of the strategic vision and overall direction of anesthesia; including opportunities for system market expansion and growth, acquisitions and efficient and high-quality performance throughout the service line.
This position will report to the Senior Corporate Vice President accountable for Anesthesia, with a dotted line to Physician Enterprise leadership. The position serves as the senior clinical leader, accountable for the overall development, quality and performance for the anesthesia practices.
MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Doctor Osteopathic Medicine or a Doctor of Medicine degree from a recognized school of medicine and fellowship trained in Anesthesiology.
- Ten (10) years of progressively responsible work experience in a senior management position in a medical practice setting, healthcare administration or a closely related field is required.MINIMUM LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED BY LAW:
- Board Certified or Eligible by the American Board of Anesthesiology
- Georgia Medical License to Practice Anesthesiology
- Post-graduate degree in healthcare or business administration preferred. Strong working knowledge of healthcare industry and experience if running complex anesthesiology practice in a multi-hospital system.
- 1. Provider & Staff Management
- a. Clinical role model and leader of System Anesthesia of the clinical activities and works with entity Peri-operative leadership for maintaining appropriate standards of care appropriate to Anesthesia.
- b. Partner with HR and Provider Recruitment for development and implementation of compensation, recruitment and retention strategies.
- c. Oversees site medical directors to efficiently manage employed provider operations.
- d. Works closely with site Medical Directors on resolution of provider concerns, patient issues and other operational opportunities.
- e. Demonstrates accessibility to the physicians and other leaders, and effectively addresses care and service issues as they arise.
- f. Coordinates activities with and works collaboratively in professional matters related to physician performance with the PE and hospital/ASC leadership teams.
- g. Responsible for leading activities among physicians and various designated operating divisions and departments to facilitate the delivery of high-quality patient care and services, while focusing on efficiency in operations and opportunities.
- h. In collaboration with clinical leadership, ensures that patient access is available at the highest reasonable level
- i. Drives and manages compensation plans in partnership with physician and APP compensation teams.
- 2. Performance Management
- a. Coordinates activities among various designated operating divisions to facilitate delivery of high-quality patient care and services, while focusing on efficiency in operations and opportunities for cost reduction.
- b. Leverages complex decision support systems such as productivity, financial, market and comparative databases to evaluate performance effectiveness and develop new opportunities for growth and optimization.
- c. Leads the preparation of annual operating and capital budgets within designated guidelines and routinely monitors progress in achieving overall financial goals.
- d. Reviews ongoing financial and operational reports for budget variances and implements opportunities for improvement.
- e. Works closely with respective leaders to assess and improve departmental performance, by providing direction and leadership for utilization and process improvement with respect to patient throughput.
- f. Interprets and effectively administers policies in order to carry out organizational objectives.
- g. Participates as Clinical Governance Council (CGC) administrator or in designated administrative functions.
- 3. Program Development and Implementation
- a. Carries out anesthesia physician practice strategies, policies, and programs as determined by PHC Executive Leadership.
- b. Understands local market and has ability to translate business needs into service line operational solutions.
- c. Oversees the coordination of clinical start-up for new practices, whether newly recruited or acquired, across the Piedmont system.
- d. Partners with the relevant strategic resources within Piedmont Healthcare to develop and implement specific programs, products and services to support the long-range direction for practice operations.
- e. Coordinates system standardization of policies, procedures, processes and protocols for relevant services in order to create a high-quality, efficient, patient centered experience across the healthcare system.
- 4. Communication
- a. Keeps corporate service line leadership & hospital/ASC executive leadership abreast of significant operational issues and problems, and formulates recommended actions and solutions.
- b. Maintains high visibility - is an approachable, credible leader; understands organizational behavior and serves as a change-agent.
- c. Acts as a liaison with System & Physician Enterprise executive teams to clarify clinical rules, structures and policies.
- 5. Other duties as assigned to support the successful development and operational performance of a systemwide anesthesia service model

• Innovative pursuit to improving overall process, service and quality of care to patients. Including the ability to examine and re-engineer operations and procedures, their context within organizational strategy, formulating policy, and develop and implement new strategies and procedures.

• Knowledge of current leadership, management, cost control and performance improvement concepts and practices.
• Knowledge and experience in matters related to physician recruitment, retention and compensation.
