As a Behavioral Health Specialist III (QP) and Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) you must meet the requirements of a Qualified Professional (QP) and have your Certified Peer Support Specialist certification.

RHA Behavioral Health Services is looking for compassionate and supportive Certified Peer Support Specialists to join our dedicated interdisciplinary healthcare team providing peer support services and assisting clients with determining personal goals for recovery.

In this dynamic role you will use your experience and knowledge to provide highly individualized services in the community, promoting individual self-determination and decision-making to individuals with Mental Health or Substance Abuse issues. Job Responsibilities 

As a Peer Support Specialist you will be responsible for providing essential expertise and consultation to the entire interdisciplinary healthcare team to promote a culture in which each individual's point of view and preferences are recognized, understood, respected and integrated into treatment, rehabilitation, and community self-help activities while serving as an advocate for clients.

The Peer Bridger position works in the community and closely with High Point/Wake Forest Baptist Hospital Behavioral Health In-patient Unit and Emergency Room.

  • Peer Bridger actively engages with all patients in the day room, builds trust and rapport, encourages hope and the beginning of the recovery process.
  • Peer Bridger works with hospital clinicians to advise thoughts on treatment options
  • Peer Bridger attends Hospital Treatment Team morning meeting daily
  • Peer Bridger assists patients to schedule assessments on the day after discharge
  • Peer Bridger takes people to their assessment appointment (within 48 hours of discharge) and picks them up
  • Peer Bridger meets with the person, as needed, but encourages Outpatient appointments to be kept independently or with the assistance of natural supports.
  • Peer Bridger requests authorization for service through Central Authorization/Central Enrollment

Additional responsibilities of the Behavioral Health Specialist (QP) include:

  • Facilitating relationships and serving as a link between the company, parents, guardians, local agencies and the community
  • Minimizing the negative effects of psychiatric symptoms or substance dependence that interfere with the recipient's daily living and personal development, providing supportive counseling
  • Supporting the client in the development of various skill building activities, including: daily and community living skills, socialization skills, adaptation skills, and behavior and anger management
  • Participating in a first responder on-call system available to consumers and/or his/her natural support network on a 24/7/365 basis; coordinates “first response" resources according to consumer need and the PCP
  • Performing Case Management functions of linking and arranging for services and referrals
  • Working closely with other clinical/professional staff to maintain communication and providing feedback, standardizing procedures and expediting PCP implementation
  • Ensuring that all initial and reauthorizations for services occur in a timely fashion
  • Monitoring utilization of service to ensure that it is effective, appropriate, and within the limits set forth in both rule, PCP, and the service authorization

Candidates for the Behavioral Health Specialist role are considered “Qualified Professionals" based on the following criteria:

Education:

  • Bachelor Degree (Not Human Services field) & 4+ years full-time experience with population served OR
  • Bachelor Degree (in Human Services field) & 2+ years full-time experience with population served OR
  • Master's Degree or Higher & 1+ years full-time experience with population served.
  • License, Provisional License, Certificate, Registration, Permit issued by governing board regulating human service profession.

Definitions:

  • Human Service Degrees include: Social Service, Sociology, Psychology, or other Human Service Degrees.
  • Populations Served Include: Mentally Ill-Child, Mentally Ill- Adult, Substance Abuse-Adult, Substance Abuse-Child
  • 2+ years full-time experience with population served OR
  • Master's Degree or Higher & 1+ years full-time experience with population served.
  • License, Provisional License, Certificate, Registration, Permit issued by governing board regulating human service profession.

Additional responsibilities of the Peer Support Specialist include:

  • Meeting with clients to provide advice and support in accordance with treatment plan
  • Assisting in peer support groups with assigned consumers on a regular basis
  • Supporting/assisting consumers in daily decision making and resolution of minor problems
  • Assisting clients by finding resources, advising the consumer of processes, and encouraging follow through with proposed resolutions, locating social activities, or provide other assistance as needed
  • Accompanying clients to meetings and participates in meetings of community groups to advocate for consumer needs, leading recovery dialogues/self-help sessions with clients
  • Fostering client's development of healthy relationships by encouraging participation in community activities
  • Observing behavior and evidence of general well-being and discusses observations with the clients
  • Modeling effective coping and self-help techniques to individuals or groups of consumers
  • Providing advice to clients on empowerment skills and successful community living
  • Informing clients on community resources and how to use them appropriately, providing information to consumers and families on specific topics, as assigned

Successful candidates of the Peer Support Specialist role are able to work as a member of a healthcare interdisciplinary team with a focus on ensuring successful recovery and overall mental health for clients.

Additional requirements of the Peer Support Specialist include: 

  • 1 year experience with adult Mental Health population
  • NC Certified Peer Support Specialist
  • Must complete a minimum of twenty (20) hours of training specific to the required components of the specific service definition including crisis response within the first 90 days of employment
  • Valid drivers' license and automotive insurance
  • Ability to pass background check and drug screen
  • CPR, first aid, NCI and/or role related certification, a plus
