Description

Description

SAIC applies cutting edge science and technology, high performance computing resources, and advanced laboratory technology to the problem of developing and testing advanced laser and nonlinear optical sensor concepts and components for the United States Air Force. The successful applicant will play a key role in lab operations, including design, development, and construction of test and evaluation facilities for advanced active sensor concepts and components.  Current research projects include development of multispectral lasers, wavelength-agile lasers, and quantum sources by employing radically new technology based on nonlinear optics in gas- or liquid-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber and solid core silica fiber. Applications include spectropolarimetric LiDAR sensors and quantum networks.

  • Responsible for coordinating with the concept team on understanding the operational principles and modes of the unit under test and applying that knowledge to the construction of appropriate test hardware.  The ability to communicate with a wide variety of subject matter experts and determine real, actionable requirements and functional designs and optical hardware is critical.
  • Support laboratory test, including setup, debugging, operation and documentation.
  • Involved in the development, set up and testing of optical and laser systems and components.
  • Work effectively both within a team and individually.
  • Must have the ability to anticipate testing requirements and technology to act proactively to position the lab for improvement and success.

Qualifications

  • Degree in science, engineering, or physics with a focus on optical principles engineering: Bachelor's, Master's, and Ph.D.  applicants are welcome.
  • Minimum education and experience requirements:
    • Bachelor's degree plus 2 years of experience, or
    • Master's degree plus 1 year of experience

Experimental research background in nonlinear optics or laser development is desired. The ideal candidate will possess experience with one of more of the following:

  • quantum optics, (un)entangled photon source generation, single photon detection
  • parametric (e.g., OPA and SPDC) or non-parametric (e.g., stimulated Raman scattering) frequency conversion techniques
  • optical characterization or determination of nonlinear properties of materials
  • experimentation with, or design of, hollow-core photonic crystal fiber
  • optical fiber handling, aligning, and glass processing (e.g., splicing, cleaving)
  • COMSOL Multiphysics software
  • Experience with numerical modeling tools such as MATLAB or Mathematica is desired.
  • Applicant must be qualified to obtain a DoD secret security clearance.  Existing clearance desired.

SAIC accepts applications on an ongoing basis and there is no deadline.

Covid Policy: SAIC does not require COVID-19 vaccinations or boosters. Customer site vaccination requirements must be followed when work is performed at a customer site.
