Position Summary:

The primary responsibility of the Third Mate is to oversee the operation of the deck, safe navigation of the vessel when standing a watch at sea (OICNW), and cargo transfer operations when standing a watch in port.  The Third Mate reports directly to the Master for navigational duties and to the Chief Mate for maintenance and safety-related duties and additional duties as assigned.

Responsibilities/Job Duties:

The Third Mate is responsible for standing all assigned watches, overseeing mooring operations, and supervising unlicensed ratings. The Third Mate assists the Chief Mate with the inspection, testing and maintenance of deck and cargo machinery as well as all firefighting, lifesaving, and safety equipment onboard.

Job Responsibilities:   
  • Assists the Chief Mate with the inspection, testing and maintenance of deck and cargo machinery and systems as well as all firefighting, lifesaving and safety equipment onboard
  • Participate in all required Fire, Emergency, Abandon ship and safety/security Training Drills and exercises
  • Perform duties as directed by the Master and Deck Officers safely and efficiently
  • Obtain working knowledge of the Safety Management System and comply with all procedures outlined within as relating to the position
  • Accurately report and record maintenance related activities as requested by an Officer.
  • Maintain a fixed daily work rotation as per STCW Work Rest guidelines
  • Day for Day Rotation work schedule (avg. 45 day on/45 day off rotation)

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:  Candidates must hold the following valid documents:

  • USCG Merchant Mariner Credential with the following endorsements:
    • International endorsements capable of foreign voyages:
  • OICNW (500 GT or More (STCW II/1)
  • GMDSS Radio Operator (STCW IV/2)
  • Advanced Fire Fighting (STCW VI/3)
  • First Aid and Medical Care (STCW VI/4)
  • Able Seafarer-Deck (STCW II/5),
  • RFPNW (STCW II/4),
  • Basic Safety Training (BST) (STCW VI/1),
  • Proficiency in Survival Craft (PSC) (STCW VI/2),
  • Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSD) (STCW VI/6)
    • National (Domestic) Endorsements:
  • Third Mate Unlimited Tonnage upon Oceans
  • Deck Officer – Radar Observer (Unlimited)
  • Able Bodied Seaman Unlimited,
  • Lifeboatman
  • Tankerman Assistant limited to Dangerous Liquid (DL) Cargoes PIC endorsement.
    • USCG STCW and National Medical Certificate
    • TWIC card
    • U. S. Passport

Education/Experience:

  • High School diploma
  • Maritime Academy graduate preferred
  • ABS Nautical Systems NS5 experience preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability as required by the U.S. Coast Guard Medical Certification (FormCG-719K). 
  • Able to work, lift and carry loads greater than 25 pounds, climbing and descending ladders.
