Description:
This position serves as a healthcare professional who, under the direction and supervision of a licensed physician, will provide care to patients seen at the Stony Brook Medicine division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology ambulatory office, located at 3 Technology Drive in East Setauket, NY. The physician extender is expected to maintain and enhance a current level of knowledge relative to professional practice, as well as meet the requirements necessary for licensure and certification. The following duties will be expected:

  • Care for patients with a variety of acute and chronic GI diseases, including but not limited to pancreatic and biliary conditions of the gastrointestinal tract and general diseases and disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. This includes both new patient consultations and follow-up visits.
  • Collaborate with supervising physician and nursing staff in the facilitation and interpretation of endoscopy, imaging and laboratory results.
  • Conduct comprehensive or episodic assessments of patients recently admitted to the hospital floors and/or emergency room with basic gastroenterological disorders.
  • Establish a medical diagnosis, order and evaluate diagnostic studies, & prescribe and regulate medications.
  • Assess and/or manage follow-up plans within the protocols and practice plans approved by the supervising physician.
  • Contact patients with endoscopy, imaging and laboratory results and return calls from patients with inquiries about their gastrointestinal care.
  • Record and document health appraisal data necessary to maintain, coordinate and expedite required services.
  • Maintain ongoing, daily communication with the physician collaborator.
  • Act as a resource and consultant to healthcare staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Physician Assistant: NYS license and certification as a Physician Assistant. Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) from an accredited school of Physician Assistants.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
At least one year of clinical experience working as a Physician Assistant. Previous experience working in gastroenterology, internal medicine, or general surgery. Work experience in gastroenterology with emphasis on outpatient/ambulatory care of patients with gastrointestinal (GI) and motility disorders.
