Your Role:

Tetra Tech, Inc. is currently seeking a part-time Environmental Scientist Intern for our Joplin, MO location to provide support on various environmental projects throughout Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri.  This position will primarily support investigations and removal activities at former lead mining areas in southeast Kansas and southwest Missouri.  In addition, this position may also support investigations at former dry cleaner sites and other sites throughout the four-state area.  Job responsibilities will include preparation of sampling plans, field studies including the collection of soil, groundwater, surface water and indoor air samples, interpretation of sample data and preparation of data summary reports, regular maintenance and calibration of equipment used during field studies, and support other environmental studies.  This position will require extensive outdoor work and some overnight travel. 

In this position you will be part of a project team and gain valuable data collection experience in the field, as well as experience in preparing detailed analysis of field data and project reports.  Tetra Tech provides mentoring and training opportunities to help junior staff hone their areas of expertise and diversify their interests.  

In addition:

  • This position requires you to drive on a regular basis. Passing a motor vehicle record background check and maintaining a valid driver's license and good driving record is required. 
  • This position also requires passing a criminal background check.

 

Qualifications/Skills:

 Candidates should have 0 to 1 years of experience and be able to work at least 16 hours per week (additional hours can be worked depending on availability).  Candidates must be 18 years of age or older.  Desired skills in the ideal candidate include but are not limited to:

  • Must possess strong analytical, organizational and communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Must be highly motivated, customer focused and work well in a team environment.
  • Proficiency with MS Word and Excel preferred.

 

Education and Certifications:

Ideal candidates should be working towards a degree in environmental science, geology, biology, environmental engineering, and/or geographic information systems (GIS).  Candidates seeking other natural science or engineering degrees are also acceptable.  

 

Physical Demands:

Must be able to lift sample coolers and other equipment up to 50 pounds.  Candidates must be able to wear full-face respirator and complete annual medical monitoring program, including pulmonary function testing.

 

Work Environment:

This position will require extensive outdoor work and overnight travel primarily within the four-state area of Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska.  Outdoor work may occur during all seasons, including peak summer and winter conditions.  This position may also support projects outside of the four-state region.
