Summary of Job Duties: The Physician Assistant (PA) for Cardiothoracic Surgeon will serve as the first assistant in the operating room, respond to pages, and provide on-call coverage as required. The PA must possess a high level of expertise to perform assessments, diagnosis, and treatment of actual or potential patient problems, along with the skills for ongoing clinical management.
Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from a nationally accredited PA program.

  • Physician Assistant license/certification or eligible to apply.

  • Must be eligible for prescriptive authority certificate.

Responsibilities:
Assessment of Health Status:

  • Obtain pertinent health and medical history.

  • Perform focused and comprehensive physical examinations.

  • Identify health risks and needs, updating and recording changes in health status.

  • Assess mental and functional status of patients.

Diagnosis:

  • Formulate appropriate differential diagnoses based on history, physical examination, and clinical findings.

  • Identify needs of individuals and families resulting from patient interviews and physical examinations.

Development of Care Plan:

  • Develop an acceptable plan of care to maximize the patient's health potential.

  • Order appropriate diagnostic tests.

  • Identify and prescribe pharmacologic agents when necessary.

  • Plan non-pharmacologic interventions as appropriate.

  • Develop education plans for patients, families, or caregivers.

  • Consult with physicians and other health professionals as needed.

Implementation of the Plan:

  • Conduct and interpret diagnostic tests accurately.

  • Assist in the operating room.

  • Prescribe pharmacologic agents under prescriptive protocols.

  • Provide relevant and timely patient and caregiver education.

  • Make appropriate referrals to other health professionals.

  • Participate in patient care conferences and utilize a team approach.

  • Ensure appropriate documentation and billing notations for care provided.
