Clinical Pharmacist Specialist, Investigational Drug Services, Full Time Days, Chicago, IL.

Clinical Pharmacists Specialist are registered pharmacists who assume responsibility and accountability of investigational products used in clinical trials to ensure patient safety and also meeting all regulatory requirements set forth in clinical trials.

Clinical Pharmacist Specialist Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Graduate of an ACPE accredited College of Pharmacy.
  • Doctor of Pharmacy or other advanced degree highly preferred.
  • Eligible for licensure as a pharmacist in the state of Illinois (complete licensure process within 60 days of employment).
  • ASHP accredited PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency and completion of an ASHP accredited PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency required.
  • Board Certification in area of expertise is preferred.
  • Clinical pharmacy experience (2-4 years) in a hospital setting preferred (required if no PGY-1 residency).
  • Exceptional aptitude or knowledge may be considered in lieu of experience. Extensive clinical experience and development may be considered in lieu of formal training.

The scope of practice for IDS pharmacy is to provide quality service for investigational drugs used at UCMC and to meet all regulatory requirements associated with storage, management and dispensing of investigational drugs used in clinical trials.

The IDS pharmacist will help establish pharmacy dispensing procedures based on IRB approved clinical trial protocol and amendments. This is done by working collaboratively with members of the research team, serving as a liaison between the protocol sponsor, pharmacy, nursing, and the primary investigator to coordinate drug therapy from a pharmacy standpoint. The pharmacist will participate in audits from the industry sponsors, FDA, DEA, NIH and other regulatory agencies.

IDS pharmacists are responsible for managing the implementation of protocols, including site qualification and initiation visits from study sponsors, documentation needs for studies, dispensing investigational products, education of these studies to nursing and pharmacy, and providing guidance and mentorship to IDS pharmacy technicians. Additional responsibilities may include precepting opportunities for students, PGY1 and PGY2 oncology residents. Participation in IRB or CTRC (Cancer Trials and Research Committee) is also a possibility, for those interested.
