We are hiring an Executive Director of Emergency & Trauma Services to work across the UChicago Medicine system. The Executive Director of Emergency & Trauma Services is responsible for effective strategic planning, leadership, and the administrative, educational, and financial management for Emergency and Trauma Services. Reporting to the Vice President of Women's, Children's and Emergency Services, this leader provides departmental oversight over the Adult and Pediatric Emergency Departments, Trauma Services, Spiritual Care, EMS, and UCAN. Primary responsibilities include long term planning for each department, day to day oversight of processes, programs, operational and capital budget management, people management and leadership, and all other assigned duties. Maintains working relationships with internal leaders/peers and external agencies and ensures improvement measures are compliant with regulatory guidelines. In alignment with the Chief Nursing Officer, this individual will be a strong voice for nurses and an advocate for nursing professional practice.

 

Executive Director of Emergency & Trauma Services Job Functions:

  • Clinical:
    • Keeps abreast of current clinical trends and technology and maintains clinical competence commensurate to areas of responsibility
    • Seeks out clinical problems/challenges, offering suggestions for improving/enhancing healthcare
    • Provides vision and action in designing and maintaining an efficient and effective healthcare delivery system
    • Monitors patient/clinical outcomes and creates a plan of action to address needs or changes
  • Budget:
    • Works with the VP to monitor the budget within established guidelines
    • Develops and monitors the chargemaster, charges, bill hold and compliance issues
    • Maintains cost effective, safe quality patient care in all areas
    • Prepares operating budget in consultation with leadership across the system
    • Provides on-going analysis of the financial performance of each Unit, with responsibility for meeting operating budget and maximizing program net income
    • Responsible for the preparation of capital equipment budgets for each Unit
    • Plans for long and short-term provision of human resources, supplies and equipment to meet the needs of the department
    • Ensures accuracy of financial and other program data
    • Collaborates with medical staff to determine equipment and supply needs
    • Demonstrates cost-conscious decision-making in collaboration with medical staff on selection, use and control of equipment and supplies
  • Personnel:
    • Responsible for leading, developing and managing the performance of all direct reports
    • Promotes teamwork, collaboration, and integration across the system
    • Selects, orients, trains, develops, and assigns work to staff
    • Develops standards of performance; evaluates performance and conducts any necessary developmental actions for all direct reports
  • Policy:
    • Recommends revisions to policies related to the care model
    • Interprets policies and objectives to staff, physicians, and others in the medical community to ensure understanding of methods and their application across all areas within scope of the role
  • Communication:
    • Creates a work climate that encourages positive staff morale, motivation, and commitment for all who participate in care
    • Conducts regularly scheduled staff meetings with Patient Care Managers and Physician Directors which provide opportunities for discussion of staff and Unit concerns
    • Applies interpersonal communication skills to maintain an open network of communication among staff members, other health care professionals and hospital departments
    • Promotes effective communication process throughout the organization
    • Helps departmental leaders in resolving questions/problems involving patient treatment plans, interpersonal conflicts, medical staff relations, and ancillary care providers
  • Leadership:
    • Formulates, implements, and evaluates goals and priorities for the department which are consistent with the UCMC's mission
    • Identifies issues, presents strategies and acts as a change agent
    • Develops, interprets, and achieves department goals through active participation in committee work and task force assignments as needed
    • Utilizes appropriate organizational resources to facilitate operations within the Emergency Units
    • Ensure timely and effective availability of patient and family support services, address patient complaints and facilitate prompt resolution, develop methods to evaluate customer satisfaction
    • In conjunction with faculty, provide recommendations and facilitate the purchase of capital equipment and renovations/construction projects associated with the ambulatory programs
    • Set a positive tone and professional leadership example, establish timely and effective communications with senior leadership, staff, and other departments
    • Completes special projects on a regular basis or as assigned
    • Works collaboratively with medical center leadership and staff
    • Demonstrates awareness of and compliance with hospital and nursing department policies and procedures
    • Participates in activities to enhance UCMC's image as a leader in the community
    • Mentoring and networking with other program directors and managers
  • Education & Professional Development:
    • Provides an environment which encourages staff to accept responsibility for learning as part of the development of their own role within the department
    • Serves as a role model for staff by presenting educational programs
    • Demonstrates knowledge of all new products and equipment related to area of expertise
    • Participates in planning and evaluation of educational programs to meet program needs and promotes the development of staff on all levels
    • Provides an environment that is conducive to educational process of professional students and other health care personnel
    • Plans, implements, and evaluates, on an ongoing basis orientation program for new employees
    • Assures compliance with JCAHO regulations for mandatory in-service education
    • Determines own needs for professional growth though ongoing assessment and participation in educational sessions/offerings inside and outside of the hospital
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

Executive Director of Emergency & Trauma Services Job Qualifications: 

  • Must hold a bachelor's degree in Nursing; a master's degree in Nursing or an advanced degree in a healthcare-related field is preferred
  • Must hold a minimum of five years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare operations; experience as an Emergency Department Director is strongly preferred
  • Must have a minimum of twelve years of clinical experience; experience in a magnet-designated organization and/or an academic medical center is strongly preferred
  • Strong verbal, written, and analytical skills are required
  • Must hold a current license as a Registered Nurse in the state of Illinois or be eligible to obtain licensure prior to start
