Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Small Animal Manager, provide supervision of the Cardiology, Dermatology, Integrative Medicine, and Ophthalmology Services. In conjunction with supervisors and faculty, assess Service needs including daily receiving and procedure schedules, staffing levels, work schedules and equipment. Assess and provide staff training needs, develop, manage and update training protocols and documentation. Responsible for direct supervision of skilled employees including probationary and annual reviews, counseling and disciplinary action, managing appropriate staffing levels, and evaluating clinical competency. Research and order new supplies and equipment. Provide para-veterinary technical, anesthesia and nursing support for a variety of invasive, non-invasive and diagnostic procedures. Provide instruction to staff, students, and clinicians in proper techniques for restraint and handling of patients, nursing care, administering treatments and obtaining a variety of diagnostic samples.

Provide equipment and facility stocking, cleaning and maintenance.

 

RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Stand, bend and kneel for 8-10 hour shifts.
  • Transport patients in carriers, on leashes, on gurneys and move patients on and off gurneys and in and out of cages.
  • Maneuver/lift equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Handle animals weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Contact with animals, including restraint of animals (sometimes fractious) as required.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work occasional overtime and various hours on short notice (including covering staff shortages, weekend and holiday shifts).
  • This position works under Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
  • Work under regular exposure to zoonotic diseases, anesthesia, cleaning chemicals and exposure to radioactive patients.
  • May require working with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught clients.
  • UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Minimum License/Certification:

 

  • Must possess a valid Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP) within 3 months of date of hire.

 

Minimum Education/Experience:

 

  • Experience supervising staff in a small animal hospital, veterinary specialty or emergency service setting; skills recognizing, assessing and providing staff mentoring in conflict resolution, specific service protocols, specialized technical skills and dynamic diagnostic procedures in a clinical setting.

 

  • Experience evaluating staff in technical and professional work performance.

 

  • Experience writing and conducting performance evaluations based on position descriptions, established expectations and protocols.

 

  • Experience communicating with a diverse group of people including clients, clinicians, referring veterinarians, students, and staff in an accurate, professional and collegial manner.

 

  • Experience working independently or as part of a team to coordinate, facilitate, set up equipment and supplies, troubleshoot and anticipate needs for activities in assigned areas in an accurate, efficient and timely manner.

 

 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

 

  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Skills to obtain a variety of biological samples from small animal patients.

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred License/Certification:

 

  • Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) License.

 

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

 

  • Skills to provide sedation, analgesia and/or general anesthesia to patients.
