Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Small Animal Patient Care Manager, provide supervision of the animal technicians (Small Animal Hospital Cleaners). Assign schedule and direct the day-to-day work of animal technicians who clean, disinfect and stock the small animal clinic. Cleaning areas include operating rooms, animal holding areas, animal treatment areas, exam rooms and common hospital areas. Performs animal technician duties as needed. This may include but not limited to: patient handling and husbandry, supporting veterinary technicians with patient care treatments, laundry, cleaning, stocking and disinfecting of the small animal areas and covering for the animal technicians as needed. Perform special projects within the VMTH, and miscellaneous tasks and help on an as needed basis.

 

RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Maneuver/lift equipment and materials weighing up to 30 pounds. 

•   Handle animals weighing up to 40 pounds. 

•   Repetitive bending, twisting, kneeling, walking and standing up to six hours. 

•   Contact with animals, including restraint of animals (sometimes fractious). 

•   Work under regular exposure to zoonotic diseases, anesthesia, sick animals, hazardous materials, radioactive materials/patients, and/or infectious diseases and cleaning chemicals. 

•   Wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including but not limited

to: gowns, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves, head caps and shoe covers. 

•   Ability to work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of veterinary students' clinical rotations.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

 

  1. Work holidays, weekends, occasional overtime and various hours on short notice.
  2. This position works under Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Minimum Education/Experience:

 

  • Experience directing staff on daily activities and providing coaching.

 

  • Experience training and/or teaching.

 

  • Experience working with disinfectants and cleaning products.

 

 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

 

  • Interpersonal oral and written communication skills to interact with a diverse group of student's staff and clients.

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

Preferred Education/Experience:   

 

  • Experience as a supervisor in a veterinary clinic

 

  • Experience using safe animal handling and restraint techniques for a wide variety of small animal patients.

 

  • Experience with small animal husbandry.

 

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

 

  • Knowledge of common hospital pathogens and methods of disinfection.
