Job Summary

Provide anesthesia technical support, create anesthesia protocols, induce, monitor, maintain and recover anesthetized animals, conduct anesthetic monitoring and recordkeeping, and promptly communicate peri-anesthesia concerns or problems to the veterinarian supervising anesthesia. Provide a broad spectrum of technical support for the Anesthesia service and communicate with the anesthesia supervisor regarding machine maintenance and supply needs. Provide support to various other services within the VMTH when anesthesia is not needed.

Applicants will be screened on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

 

This position may be eligible for a hiring bonus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Work standing, bending and kneeling for 8-10 hour shifts.
  • Acute hearing to discern heart and lung sounds using a stethoscope.
  • Ability to transport patients on gurneys and move patients on and off gurneys and in and out of cages.
  • Work with and around large domestic farm animals.
  • Contact with animals (sometimes fractious) as required.
  • May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including but not limited to: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, N95 masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers.

 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Fluctuating meal periods; work schedule does not allow a set meal period.
  • Work in high traffic areas, confined, or small spaces, noisy environments and tolerate unpleasant odors.
  • No eating or drinking in surgery, treatment or procedure rooms and some other areas of the hospital.
  • Work under Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
  • Work in environments where zoonotic diseases may be present.-Follow all Infectious Disease Control protocols.
  • Work in environments with exposure to anesthetic agents.
  • Work in environments with exposure to cleaning chemicals.
  • Work in environments with exposure to monitored ionizing radiation, including but not limited to x-rays, fluoroscopy, positron emission tomography, radioactive iodine-treated animals, technetium scans, and computerized tomography, and future radiology imaging or treatment modalities.
  • Work in environments with strong magnetic fields, including but not limited to magnetic resonance imaging and future diagnostic imaging modalities.
  • May require working with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught clients.
  • Work in other clinic areas on an as needed basis.
  • Work in both small animal anesthesia and large animal anesthesia service areas and provide anesthesia care to patients as directed by the anesthesia supervisor.
  • Adapt to and work with newly developed surgical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and anesthetic techniques and modalities.
  • UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Minimum License/Certification:

 

  • Must possess a California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license or hold a current License/Certification in another state and obtain a CA RVT license within 3 months from the date of hire.

 

Minimum Education/Experience:

 

  • Experience to independently provide treatment of patients whose conditions are likely to change on a moment to moment basis.

 

  • Experience working in a veterinary hospital performing physical examinations and safe handling of multiple species.

 

  • Experience calculating drug dosages and administering medications intravenously, subcutaneously, intramuscular or orally.

 

  • Experience responding to emergencies and providing CPR.

 

  • Experience performing venipuncture, placing vascular catheters inducing anesthesia, monitoring anesthesia, and recovering patients from anesthesia, working independently with and without direct supervision.

 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

 

  • Skills to restrain and handle dogs, cats and the ability to learn safety skills to work with and around livestock, and horses.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred License/Certification:

 

  • Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) certification in Anesthesia or obtain VTS in anesthesia in the future.

 

Preferred Education/Experience:   

 

  • Experience in a specialty hospital setting with various species performing sedation and anesthesia.

 

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

 

  • Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to interact with a diverse group of students, staff, clinicians and clients and the skill to recognize and manage difficult situations.

 

  • Knowledge of normal laboratory values for cats and dogs and have the desire to learn about livestock and horses.
