Job Summary

Independent of supervision, in a hospital setting, as a significant part of daily duties provide moment to moment monitoring and reassessment of emergent, critically ill, or sedated patients. Provide paraveterinary technical and nursing support. Perform, instruct, and provide technical support for a variety of endoscopic and diagnostic procedures. Provide technical support for a variety of treatments, diagnostic procedures, and advanced procedures. Provide instruction to students, clinicians and other staff in proper techniques for restraint and handling of patients, nursing care, administering treatments and obtaining a variety of diagnostic samples. Provide equipment and facility stocking, cleaning, and maintenance.

 

RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Work standing, bending and kneeling for 8-10 hour shifts.
  • Transport patients in carriers, on leashes, on gurneys and move patients on and off gurneys and in and out of cages.
  • Maneuver/lift equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Handle animals weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Contact with animals, including restraint of animals (sometimes fractious) as required.
  • May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

 

  • Work occasional overtime and various hours on short notice (including covering staff shortages, weekend and holiday shifts).
  • Work under Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
  • Work under regular exposure to zoonotic diseases, anesthesia, cleaning chemicals and exposure to radioactive patients.
  • May require working with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught clients.
  • Work in other related areas of the VMTH/CCAH.
  • UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

 

Minimum Education/Experience:

 

  • Experience calculating and administering dosages of medications, parenteral fluids and diets to small animal patients.

 

  • Experience working as an animal health technician in a small animal clinical setting, including safe patient handling and restraint for diagnostic procedures, sample collection, transport, as well as experience in obtaining biological samples.

 

  • Experience maintaining general anesthesia in small animal patients, support, and monitoring equipment, assessing patient status and independently responding to changes.

 

  • Experience interviewing clients to obtain patient medical histories to record findings in the medical record and provide client education.

 

 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

 

  •  Skill to independently provide intense moment to moment monitoring and reassessment of emergent, critically ill, or anesthetized patients. Including knowledge of normal anatomy and physiology, and normal vital parameters of canines and felines.

 

  • Interpersonal skills to work with a diverse group of people including clients, clinicians, students, and staff in a professional, positive, and collegial manner.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred License/Certification:

  • Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) License.

 

 

 

Preferred Education/Experience:   

 

  • Experience with common canine and feline endoscopic procedures, patient preparation, supplies and equipment.

 

  • Experience with common endoscopic equipment and instrumentation handling, operation, function, troubleshooting, cleaning and maintenance.
