JOB SUMMARY

The Assistant Director for Genome Technologies plays a key leadership role in guiding and supervising a team of engineers involved in research and development activities. This position involves overseeing projects, providing technical leadership, and ensuring the successful execution of research and development initiatives.

 

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $101,100 - $123,900/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

30% - Instructional Lab Planning

  • Direct oversight and responsibility for instructional lab operational budget, equipment replacement budgets including long-range financial planning for these areas.
  • Develop lab assignments/schedules meeting lab requirements provided by instructors.
  • Coordinate with instructional lab committee, develop lab modernization plans, develop cost estimates and implements plans within allocated budget.
  • Review and balance course materials expenses and fee income. Update course material fee approval requests to adjust to changing circumstances. Submit corrections to student billing.
  • Develop mid to long-term lab modernization plans; is a member, major presenter, and provides staffing support to the Instructional Lab Committee (ILC).

30% - Supervising

  • Hiring manager and provide direct supervision and guidance to lower level research and development engineers and additionally supervises the receiving/storekeeper operation.
  • Hiring manager and provides direct supervision and guidance to BELS graduate teaching assistants and undergraduate technical staff.
  • Responsible for performance evaluations of lower level research and development engineers, receiver/storekeeper, and graduate teaching assistants.
  • Lead, plan, organize, and perform the work of a professional engineering team engaged in a specialized engineering field of a training and/or research program.
  • Work with management and HR team to develop staffing plans, requests, and justifications.

20% - Laboratory Safety, Ergonomics and Hazardous Materials Program

  • Responsible for new hire training and for ensuring that BELS staff and students in the lab continue to meet all safety training requirements.
  • Ensure equipment and facilities plans meet current best safety practices.
  • Review standard operating procedures(SOPs), training verifications, lab safety binders and ensure compliance to applicable standards and ensure personnel accessing hazardous labs have complied with requirements.
  • Principal investigator (supervisor) for the BSOE fabrication and laser and optics lab.
  • Develop and improve the automated safety training program for BSOE fabrication lab, laser and optics lab, and BELS operational facilities. Maintain the system and provide for periodic auditing to ensure best safety practices are being met.
  • Coordinate the collection and the removal of hazardous waste materials associated with the BELS operations and with BSOE fabrication and instructional operations.

20% - Assistance to Research Labs, Facilities and Special Projects

  • Advise and provide design/fabrication services to research labs via recharge reimbursement as time permits. Provide financial oversight of recharge operation.
  • Assist facilities staff with special event support such as commencement.
  • Assist facilities and ITS staff with emergency response for research and instruction equipment support during utility outages. This may require call back as available.
  • Special projects as directed by Divisional needs.
  • Assist with research lab support projects via recharge for time and materials.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology, Genomics, or related field and/or equivalent experience and training.
  • Extensive experience in a wet lab and understanding of basic protocols for DNA extraction and quality assessment.
  • Solid knowledge in long-read sequencing technology platforms (minimal requirement in nanopore sequencing technology).
  • Solid knowledge in prior knowledge of diverse protocols to support different data types (HiC, long-read, short read).
  • Demonstrated experience with working on the command line.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage equipment and staffing budgets within parameters set by leadership.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with coordinating technical projects with stakeholders and taking projects from concept to completion and within budget. Experience coordinating people with multiple open-ended projects concurrently, with minimum guidance from supervisors.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy and flexibility to work effectively with a diverse population of widely varying cultures, backgrounds and technical skills, including experience in communicating technical concepts and operations to non-technical people.
  • Knowledge to write standard operating procedures for laboratory experiments and to develop, update and follow Injury and Illness Preventions Plans (I2P2).
  • Able to learn new technical and procedural information from a wide variety of sources, independently and without formal training.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master of Science degree.
  • Emphasis on prior management experience and publication development.
  • Demonstrated experience directing and supervising a diverse technical and/or engineering staff at the first line level towards multiple objectives.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in operating digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, identifying electronic parts including subassemblies, resistors, capacitors, and integrated circuits sufficient to troubleshoot electronic circuits.
  • Experience using, installing and configuring Microsoft Windows 7 and 10 on a variety of computers; user level ability with Unix based operating system computers, sufficient to learn system administration skills with minimal informal training.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in using Google applications (included email, calendar, sheets, and documents) web-enabled tools on MS Windows 7/10, MacOS, Linux using several browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari) and developing document/spreadsheets in MS Word and Excel with formulas and data entry.

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
  • The selected candidate has the option to work a hybrid work schedule. If a hybrid work schedule is confirmed, the selected candidate must be able to work successfully from a home/remote office and be able to fulfill the requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
  • Ability to work safely in areas where hazardous materials are present or stored.
  • Ability to wear proper safety attire (long pants, closed-toe shoes, etc.) and personal protective equipment common in a laboratory setting.
  • Ability to read signs and follow directions on labels that are written in English as well as ability to read and understand Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and the proper use of chemical compounds.
  • Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
  • Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
