Job Summary

Under limited supervision, provide grief and crisis support services to VMTH clients and to provide support and guidance to faculty and staff of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital who are dealing with clients that require basic to highly complex grief or crisis support resulting from pet loss, pet illness, or need for hospice care. Performs consultation and counseling and evaluates mental health issues of limited to moderate complexity in settings dealing with issues of grief and loss and stress management as a result of pet illness or death. Apply the understanding of the broader implications of grief on mental health within pediatric, adult, and geriatric age groups; and can identify counseling theories and interventions or the need to refer the client out for therapy that is more extensive. Interact and counsel students, staff, and clinicians that interact with distraught clients. Provide service to clients of both the large animal and small animal clinic. In addition, provide guidance to clinicians and staff on best practices in grief and crisis support. This role reports to the VMTH and coordinates with the campus Academic and Staff Assistance Program (ASAP) as needed.

RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Move/life office supplies/boxes of files weighing up to 25 lbs.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

  • Use computer keyboard/mouse for extended periods of time.

 

  • May work with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught clients.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Minimum License/Certification:

 

  • Registered with the Board of Behavioral Sciences in California as an LMFT, LCSW, or LPCC 

 

  • Clinical Supervisor certification up to date.

 

  • Licensed or license-eligible in California as an LMFT, LCSW, or LPCC. If license-eligible, must obtain California license within 6 months of hire date.

 

 

Minimum Education/Experience:

 

  • Experience working in a hospital or mental health setting providing counseling services related to bereavement, grief and loss, and stress management.

 

  • Experience treating pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations and diverse social, cultural, and sociocultural backgrounds using short-term models of individual psychotherapy/counseling and family systems.

 

  • Experience assessing and intervening when individuals present in crisis.

 

 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

 

  • Skills to conduct psychosocial assessments of high-risk clients (depressed, suicidal etc.,) experiencing grief and loss, including pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations.

 

  • Knowledge and skills working with death/dying/bereavement issues.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

Preferred Education/Experience:   

 

  • Experience in a veterinary setting or working with veterinarians.

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

 

  • Knowledge of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) in identifying diagnosis of mental disorders in order to assess treatment options and appropriate referral.

 

  • Knowledge of ethical, legal, and university standards and regulations. Knowledge of mandated reporting responsibilities/requirements (i.e., child and/or elder abuse reporting).
