Department Summary:

As a statewide program of the University of California's Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources, UC Environmental Stewards is the hub of a collective impact network. We offer two adult environmental education certification courses: Climate Stewards and California Naturalist. Both certifications are community college level, interdisciplinary, science centered courses that combine a minimum of 40 hours of classroom and field learning.

 

Position Summary:

The Community of Practice Educator will lead the efforts of the UC Environmental Stewards program to increase the sustained engagement of its Climate Stewards and California Naturalist course alumni to advance community and ecosystem resilience. Specifically, the Community of Practice Educator will facilitate continued social learning and the refinement of stewardship practices through education, training, and networking events as well as strategic communications. By cultivating and building capacity of communities of practice around the state, the Community of Practice Educator will catalyze California Naturalist and Climate Stewards alumni to build community and ecosystem resilience. 

This is a statewide position and the specific office location may include any available UC ANR/UCCE office locations.

 

This position is a contract appointment that is 100% fixed.

 

Pay Scale: $59,000/year to $81,200/year

Key Responsibilities:

35%

Synthesizes available data, needs, and existing practices to develop and co-design new or nascent outreach programs and curricula to be delivered or co-facilitated through training and train the trainer programs for communities of practice statewide. Identifies opportunities, prepares plans, and identifies strategies and metrics for measuring Community of Practice results and outcomes.

20%

Direct and manage communications across all platforms including website, social media, and email. Work with director to create engaging, alumni-focused content for social media and outreach including blog posts, Instagram, Facebook, videos, newsletters, and other media. Gather statistics and illustrative anecdotes to write reports about reach and impact.

15%

Functions as the lead network liaison between the program and our program partners and alumni groups. Leads the program's incentive, recognition, and awards programs for course alumni, instructors and program partners.

10%

Consults with and participates in management team steering committee regarding program activities, outreach and extension and supports relevant community of practice tasks they identify.

10%

Independently manages Community of Practice related budget planning processes, including pre and post grant/gift management for assigned programs / projects.

10%

Increase participation and engagement, by working with local instructors and community of practice leaders statewide to design and deliver social learning efforts that are locally and culturally relevant and meet the needs, priorities, and interests of the community.

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience / training.
  • Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and presentation skills.
  • Advanced ability to network with affiliated organizations outside of the university to advance program effectiveness.
  • Designs, develops, cultivates, and conducts training courses, outreach, and communities of practice and other materials to program partners throughout the state.
  • Advanced organizational skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously to meet objectives within prescribed timelines, budgets and other resources.
  • Skill in using business software systems in the completion of work assignments, i.e. Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint.
  • In depth knowledge of current community, environmental, educational programs and trends.

 

Preferred Skills:

  • Advanced knowledge of scientific area and understanding of how work may impact other areas.

 

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • This position is a contract appointment that is 100% fixed and ends 3 years from date of hire with the possibility of extension if funding permits. 
  • Must comply with regulatory agency reporting requirements (California's Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act).
  • Must possess valid California Driver's License to drive a County or University vehicle. Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule as needed, proof of liability damage insurance on vehicle used is required. Reimbursement of job-related travel will be reimbursed according to University policies.
  • The University reserves the right to make employment contingent upon successful completion of the background check. This is a designated position requiring a background check and may require fingerprinting due to the nature of the job responsibilities. UC ANR does hire people with conviction histories and reviews information received in the context of the job responsibilities.
