Job Summary

The Wingo Lab seeks a highly motivated candidate with experience across a range of IT domains including software development, software deployment, system architecture, distributed computing, systems administration, and analytic skills. The ideal candidate will be proficient using rented or on-premises computing infrastructure. They will also be expert in designing on-premises computing solutions and using high performance computing. A strong background in systems administration, proficiency in two or more scripting language (e.g., bash, perl, python), and knowledge for deploying software securely at scale. A critical facet of the position will be data management, so evidence of meticulous record keeping and clear/concise communication are essential. We value individuals who are objective oriented and who want to learn and teach new skills. The candidate must be able to work independently with minimal guidance.

The Wingo Lab is an interdisciplinary collaborative research group of highly successful investigators that spans psychiatry, neurology, biostatistics, bioinformatics, genetics, biochemistry, and neuroscience. The candidate will work independently on a range of projects for stakeholders which include principal investigators, data scientists, and developers. Projects include: 1) develop and maintain infrastructure for performing large scale analysis of genetic, proteomic, and transcriptomic data; 2) automate cost-effective backup solutions and organization of data; 3) architect and deploy internal and public-facing applications; 4) implement analysis pipelines; 5) project management, especially the computational resources and data.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS with 5+ years or MS with 4+ years or PhD with 2+ years of applicable experience is expected.
  • Degree(s) should be in a technical discipline such as Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Physics, Mathematics, or other related fields.
  • Demonstrated ability to propose, initiate, and carry out ambitious data-intensive research projects.
  • Self-motivated and works well both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong collaboration skills with highly technical researchers and ability to engage across a variety of methodological fields (e.g., computer science, mathematics, and statistics), computational platforms, and ideally, research domains (e.g., health sciences, life sciences, social sciences, and medicine).
  • Excellent and demonstrated ability to regularly, effectively communicate with management teams.
  • Ability to communicate data insights that translate into significant impact in a clear and effective manner to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization and to external research and education audiences.
  • In depth skills and experience with independently resolving complex computing / data / CI problems using introductory and / or intermediate principles.
  • Ability to curate/clean/organize large and messy datasets; to write code to query and transform both unstructured and structured data.
  • Strong programming skills in scripting languages such as Python, Perl, Ruby; Java/Scala, and SQL and comfort with advanced analytics tools such as R, Spark, and/or Tableau, in addition to in programming languages (e.g. C/C++).
  • Proficiency with Linux administration, shell scripting. Proficiency with Amazon web (or similar) services for distributed computing. Proficiency with high performance computing and system architecture, Experience with JavaScript, Rust, Go, or C.
  • Fluent in using scientific computing environments, e.g. HPC cluster (CPUs and GPUs) or cloud (AWS, Azure, Google, Salesforce, IBM, or VMWare).
  • Highly advanced skills, and extensive experience associated multiple of the following: data modeling; data mining; mathematical modeling; artificial intelligence; machine learning; deep learning models (e.g., 2/3d CNN, LSTM/GRU), architecture (e.g., Resnet, U-net), and frameworks (e.g.,Tensorflow, pytorch, keras); natural language processing; knowledge graphs; reinforcement learning; data representation, and optimization.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in health and biomedical sectors preferred, but not required.

Department Description

The Department of Neurology conducts basic and clinical research on the nervous system and provides clinical care for people with neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia, epilepsy, movement disorders like Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases, tremor, dystonia, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular conditions, headache and sleep disorders.

Our faculty includes leading neuroscientists, who work to expand our knowledge of nervous system function, as well as neurologists and psychologists who provide diagnosis and treatment for adults and children. We partner with colleagues from throughout the health system and work closely with the Department of Neurological Surgery to provide multidisciplinary team management for neurological disorders. We also offer cutting-edge diagnostic approaches, including advanced neuroimaging technologies and access to trials of new medications and other therapeutic modalities.
