Department Purpose

The EH&S Office is responsible for encouraging safe and healthful working conditions for all UC Davis staff, faculty, visitors, and students. Within EH&S, the Environmental Compliance unit provides specialized services in all areas of health and safety and industrial hygiene.

Job Summary            

UC Davis Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) is committed to providing a safe environment to Campus students, employees, faculty, and visitors. Under the general direction of the EH&S Manager and in coordination with the Industrial Hygiene (IH) Group, the Asbestos and Lead Program Specialist serves as the subject matter expert and point of contact for the development, implementation, and upkeep of the Campus Asbestos and Lead Program database. The program's database will eventually comprise lead and asbestos-containing material (ACM) data for all facilities on the Davis Campus. Responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following: collaborating with other University departments to develop the program and database; compiling and categorizing existing ACM data and uploading it to the database; performing inspections of Campus facilities to classify previously unidentified ACM and suspect ACM; regularly updating the database as new data becomes available; supporting the IH Group with asbestos program-related tasks; performing other EH&S tasks and responsibilities as needed. The Specialist will participate in the departmental daily and afterhours “on-call” team to provide technical information and response to the campus community.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Frequent sitting, standing, and walking.
  • Occasionally climbing ladders, accessing basements, crawlspaces, mechanical areas, and roofs.
  • Occasionally bending, walking, and stooping in confined spaces.
  • Occasionally wearing personal protective equipment (respirator, hard hat, gloves, etc.)
  • Frequent driving. 
  • Regularly lifting and moving equipment weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • Occasionally working in noisy industrial environmental for short durations.
  • Additional Equipment Used to Perform the Duties: Vehicles, Computer, Industrial hygiene instruments

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This position may at times require the employee to work with or be in an area where hazardous substances, radioactive materials, and/or infectious diseases are present.
  • Medical monitoring and surveillance may be required. 
  • Participate in the emergency response system, responding as requested to after-hour emergencies that require joint cooperation between Fire, Police, Facilities Maintenance and EH&S. 
  • Work occasional evenings/nights. 
  • Work occasional weekends and holidays.
  • Frequent driving. Valid California Driver's License is required.
  • UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, environmental health, occupational health, chemistry, environmental toxicology, biological sciences, public health, or similar discipline. Different academic backgrounds with relevant work experience will also be considered.
  • 2-5 years of relevant industrial hygiene experience with focus on the following topics:
    • Asbestos and lead industry (assessments, sampling, oversight, abatement, reporting, etc.)
    • Hazard assessments
    • Exposure sampling

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Familiarity with OSHA, Cal/OSHA, AHERA, NESHAP/EPA, CDPH, ASHRAE, NIOSH, and AIHA regulations, guidelines, and standards involving industrial hygiene, indoor air quality, lead, and asbestos.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills to interact with Campus stakeholders, convey technical information in lay terms, interpret and advise on regulations and laws, conduct training and educational programs, and develop detailed compliance reports and correspondence.
  • Knowledge and skill to interpret regulations and determine applicability to Campus operations.
  • Familiarity and efficiency with common computer software and applications such as Microsoft Office.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred License/Certification: 

  • AHERA asbestos certifications or demonstrated relevant work experience and knowledge of asbestos regulations and hazards.
  • California Asbestos Consultant (CAC)

Preferred Education/Experience:   

  • Experience working with databases.
