Departmental Overview

Instructional Development is a service organization supporting the instructional mission of the campus. Its activities directly address the major goal in the campus' Academic Planning Statement, "Ensure Excellence in Both Undergraduate and Graduate Instruction". The mission of Instructional Development is to foster a climate for excellence in instruction, which parallels the climate for excellence in research, within a world class institution of higher education. The mission is addressed by following a model which has evolved over the past three decades and is reflected in the organization of the department. We have a substantial impact on the quality of instruction offered at UCSB. We are able to comprehensively and effectively address the needs of a faculty which teaches a tremendous range of subject matter, using a wide array of teaching philosophies, methods, styles, and technologies.

Brief Summary of Duties

Provides support for events by assisting with client needs, staffing, and advice on audio-visual media needs and capabilities based on the event and venue. Sets up all aspects of event including a variety of audio, video, computer, projection, and lighting equipment. Serves as additional staffing for event support in all areas of Instructional Development including but not limited to IV Theaters, Campbell Hall, and the Interactive Learning Pavilion. Coordinates with other Instructional Development Staff to ensure all elements are in place for scheduled events. Works with the department and campus network administrators to ensure network connectivity, as needed, for events. Assists Video Services staff with audio, video, computer display and lighting elements of video production. Works with repair and maintenance staff to ensure that equipment is working properly and reliably. Supervises and trains student assistants in the field to support events. Meets with clients and Instructional Development Staff to confirm schedules and client requirements. Advises Instructional Development Staff on equipment purchases.

Required Qualifications 

  • 1-3 years of experience in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Associate's Degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Strategic planning skills.
  • Solid organizational skills and ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as work collaboratively with other locations.
  • Analytical and critical thinking skills.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Excellent planning and project management skills.
  • Customer service focus across broad and diverse subject areas.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, local, sponsor and institutional regulations, policies, and guidelines.
  • Mastery level knowledge of technical aspects of at least one production area such as lighting, sound, and/or video.

Special Conditions of Employment

  • Satisfactory completion of a conviction history background check.
  • Driver's License (U08): Must maintain valid CA DL, a clean DMV record and enrollment in DMV Pull-Notice Program.
  • Mostly night and weekend work. This position requires a very flexible schedule, based on event needs. Most events take place during the afternoons, nights and weekends, but must also be available to support events throughout the day.

Job Duties/Percent Time

Event Support 80%: Provides timely communication with faculty, student groups and staff to establish event timelines. Establishes client's event needs and identifies potential problems. Performs advance work necessary to ensure the success of complex events, including timely communication with faculty, student groups and staff to identify needs, available resources, and solutions for potential problems. Based on client needs, creates estimates prior to an event, and invoices after an event. Under general supervision, coordinates event logistics, including student event staff, audio/visual equipment and theatrical equipment. 

Operates and trains student event staff on event equipment including but not limited to: 

  • Video and audio playback devices
  • Microphones, sound mixers, and speakers
  • Theatrical lighting equipment
  • Hybrid meeting equipment
  • Projection equipment
  • Client provided equipment where applicable

Assists with public events in other all areas of Instructional Development's Classroom Services department unit as needed, including, but not limited to, IV Theaters, Campbell Hall and the Interactive Learning Pavilion. May be required to act as liaison with campus safety officials.

Supervision 10%: Schedules, trains, and supervises student staff who provide event support. Coordinates student's schedules to ensure that events are appropriately staffed. Reviews student payroll.

Administration 10%: Communicates effectively with clients and ID staff to avoid staffing, and resource scheduling conflicts. Advises ID staff on purchases of permanent, transportable, and expendable equipment and supplies.
