Departmental Overview

Cal Youth Programs & Camps continue to uphold the Cal tradition of excellence. Since 1960, we have offered a wide variety of safe, enriching, recreational summer camps, and year round activities and experiences for kids of all ages.

Kids from 14 months to 18 years can sign up for a tailored Gymnastics Program at UC Berkeley.


Responsibilities
  • Proposes budgets, grants, and purchases for gymnastic program.
  • Determines the coaching strategies, goals and objectives for the competitive and recreational youth gymnastic program on a short and long term basis.
  • Proposes and implements coach and instructor recruitment strategy in support of employee hiring fulfillment.
  • Assumes full team and program responsibility for individual athlete and participant performance.
  • Monitors the safety, physical and mental well-being of athletes and participants.
  • Ensures that all staff is qualified for the levels they are coaching or instructing and that all drills and skills are safe and effective.
  • Monitors gymnastics equipment to ensure safety and proper function.
  • Evaluates participant performance and designs instructional opportunities to improve technical and strategic execution based on sound motor learning and biomechanical principles.
  • Develops gymnastic routines for multiple skill levels and coaches on technique.
  • Coaches and supports team at all competitive events.
  • Plans, conducts, and supervises practice and conditioning sessions.
  • Participates in the training and development of the competitive team coaches.
  • Steps in to coach any level and class when needed.
  • Ensures adherence to all governing rules, policies and procedures set by USAG, UC Regents, UC Berkeley, Recreational Sports, and Golden Bears Youth Gymnastics.
  • Collaborates with coaches and instructors to assess participants' skills and to assign team or activity positions.
  • Evaluates participants and documents progress in accordance with USAG and program standards.

Required Qualifications
  • Must have effective interpersonal, motivational and team leadership skills to work effectively with sports
  • participants.
  • Must be able to demonstrate creativity, sound judgment and decision-making, be an effective problem solver, an effective communications abilities, verbally and in writing.
  • Must have specialized knowledge of competitive gymnastics.
  • Must have leadership skills to mentor and develop athletes or all ages and abilities.
  • Previous experience working with age levels specific to an activity.
  • Must have 10+ years of recreational, Compulsory, Xcel, and Optional gymnastics coaching at all levels of gymnastics.

Education/Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Standard First Aid Training Certification required.
  • Previous experience working with age level specific to an activity is required.

Licenses or certifications, if any:

  • Current USAG Coach Certification.
  • Current on all USAG Safety and Standards Certifications.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Red Cross CPR preferred.
  • Certification to instruct in the applicable recreational sports program or equivalent experience preferred.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position.  Salary is commensurate with experience.

Other Information

This is a full-time, 40-hours per week, contract appointment. Contract renewal is contingent on departmental review.
