Brief Summary of Job Duties:

General duties include independently preparing, packing and sorting large quantities of fly food for five research labs. Preparation of the fly food entails: following a standard recipe for fly food, learning how to identify cooked food, quickly dispensing of fly food into hundreds of vials and bottles, being able to identify any issues with the food and make appropriate changes to address any of these issues which may require editing recipe based on the season as the temperature and humidity may affect texture and quality of food. Lab assistant will be responsible for independently taking inventory of fly food supplies to ensure that there is no disruption in the fly food availability. Lab assistant will also provide proper maintenance of the cooking equipment (e.g.: kettle, bottle dispenser, etc.). Will help other lab members with maintaining fly lines for both Craig and Denise Montell labs which entails having a thorough understanding of the fly life cycle and a general understanding of fly genetics. Maintenance of fly stocks will require assistants to be careful to prevent contamination and use a dissecting microscope. Help Craig and Denise Montell lab managers with administrative duties including but not limited to: taking inventory for common lab supplies and ordering when supply is low. Autoclave waste and glassware for Denise and Craig Montell. Will oversee the undergraduate lab assistants while making the fly food.


Required Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years prior professional work experience required 
  • High School Diploma 
  • Must be very reliable, organized and able to pay attention to detail 
  • Proficient in MS Word, MS Excel 
  • Comfortable with lifting light loads (approx. 20 lbs) 
  • Comfortable with working in a lab environment 



Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some college-level biology coursework or lab experience

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • 30% Fly food preparation - Prepare high quality nutritional fly food media for 5 different research labs to be used for fly research(Denise Montell and Craig Montell-Weekly; Julie Simpson and Matthieu Louis- Once every two weeks; Sung Soo Kim-Monthly). Be able to identify necessary changes needed to maintain food quality.

 

  • 20% Autoclave - Autoclave fly waste and tissue culture waste. Clean and autoclave glassware and lab consumables such as pipette tips and eppendorf tubes.

 

  • 20% Ordering / receiving / inventory - Take laboratory inventory for both labs and common use supplies. Help both Craig and Denise Montell lab managers with ordering supplies using university punchout. Receives ordering and documents it as received in respective laboratory documents.

 

  • 10% Assist lab members - Assist other lab assistants and lab managers with miscellaneous tasks in the lab such as, but not limited to: performing administrative tasks as needed, fly stock keeping which requires recognizing different stages of the fly life cycle as well as paying close attention to spot contamination of a fly line. 

 

  • 10% Monitor / inventory - Monitor/inventory fly food ingredients, maintain cooking equipment, send out weekly food order reminders, and maintain and keep up-to-date fly food cost spreadsheets.

 

  • 5% Fly food storage - Pack, label and appropriately store the fly food once it has dried. Monitor the food storage area to ensure food is used in timely fashion to prevent mite infestations.

 

  • 5% Undergrad management - Train, oversee and monitor undergraduate lab assistants.
