The Senior Director of Development is responsible for developing, coordinating and executing long- and short-term strategies to secure major gifts from individuals, alumni and other entities in support of the school's mission and strategic plan. Both independently, and in coordination with other members of the staff, the Senior Director of Development will manage a portfolio of prospects and donors and will strategically identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major gifts to the School. This will include regular travel to regions with large populations of UCLA Samueli alumni and parents and will be conducted both independently and as part of staffing the Dean and School leadership on cultivation and solicitation visits. The Senior Director will have knowledge of gift vehicles including planned, capital, blended and major/principal gifts to secure philanthropic support for the School. This individual will serve as a liaison between External Affairs and one or more student and/or academic departments within the school and meet with faculty in priority areas to gain knowledge of research, expertise and funding needs. The Senior Director will have demonstrated experience with volunteer boards and/or advisory committees to participate in the recruitment and development of the Dean's Executive Board. This individual will work closely and collaboratively with a wide variety of internal and external constituents across the School, University and beyond to increase engagement and overall philanthropic support for UCLA Samueli.
In addition, the Senior Director will work with development, academic and administrative leadership of UCLA Samueli and the School of Law to secure funding for initiatives and priorities of the Institute for Technology, Law and Policy (ITLP). Launched in January 2020, the ITLP is a partnership between the UCLA School of Law and UCLA Samueli that examines the benefits and risks presented by technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, robotics, cybersecurity and digital media and communications and explores how new technology affects society, privacy, government and public policy. To further the work of cross-disciplinary institute, the Senior Director of Development will be responsible for developing a cohesive plan and strategies to raise awareness of and garner philanthropic support from individuals, corporations and foundations to advance the goals and objectives of the ITLP.
1.Minimum of five years of progressive responsibility and experience as a professional development officer and/or prior professional experience in a related field such as sales, marketing or business development. Required 2.Working knowledge of the principles and practices of fundraising in a university setting with a strong understanding of the goals, functions and services of a research university or institution of equivalent complexity. Required 3.Proven skills in developing sophisticated strategies in planning, implementing and administering complex major gift solicitations or other solicitations of a similar nature, level and complexity. Required 4.Strong documented record of gifts solicited and closed in the special and major gifts range and/or solicitations of a similar nature, level and complexity. Required 5.Management experience preferred. Preferred 6.Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to work harmoniously with volunteers, academic leaders, faculty, and other development staff toward the accomplishment of fundraising goals. Required 7.Demonstrated skill working with a dean and/or senior faculty of a professional school or equivalent leadership of a similar level and type at a comparable organization. Required 8.Strong ability to recruit, orient, train, organize, motivate and evaluate staff and volunteers who support development goals and programs. Required 9.Ability to establish priorities, manage multiple tasks and multi-phase projects simultaneously from inception to completion and complete work under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment with minimum supervision. Required 10.Ability to communicate persuasively, both orally and in writing, about UCLA's fundraising goals and the specific priorities of the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering; equal ability to listen perceptively and convey sensitivity and awareness. Required 11.Excellent written and communication skills, with the ability to produce business correspondence, solicitation materials, appropriate letters of acknowledgement, proposals to individuals, corporations and foundations, and reports. Required 12.Impeccable integrity and discretion in dealing with donors, alumni, students, administrators and colleagues as well as confidential information. Required 13.Experience conceptualizing, planning and implementing special events. Required 14.Knowledge of Microsoft Suite of applications is required as is familiarity with other applications, programs and databases as needed with a willingness to learn new technologies.
