Working Days and Hours: Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm (Must have a flexible schedule. May include clinic hours on Thursday evenings and weekday/weekend game coverage.)

Student Health Service (SHS) is a full service on campus primary healthcare facility for UC Santa Barbara students.  We see students on both an appointment and as-needed basis. Our auxiliary services included on-site laboratory, pharmacy, x-ray, and physical therapy.  Our specialty services include gynecology, sports medicine, travel medicine, psychiatry and an extensive alcohol and drug program complements other behavioral health services.

Brief Summary of Job Duties
Under the general direction of the Student Health Medical Director, provides direct clinical services in Primary Care for all eligible patients at UCSB Student Health Service. Also provides consultation on a per case basis if needed, for all members of the professional staff to assist them with diagnosis and treatment of their patients. Provides supervision for the Physician Assistants when the Primary Supervisor is unavailable as assigned by the UCSB SHS Executive Director and/or Medical Director. Directs Sports Medicine services for the campus, providing direct specialty care and acting as Medical Director and Consultant to the Intercollegiate Athletics Program, and provides direction to the Sport Club program in the UCSB Recreation Department.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree or recognized equivalent.
  • Must have a current CA Medical license and DEA license at all times during employment. 
  • Must have, and maintain, current Board Certification in Family Practice, Internal Medicine or Pediatrics or Emergency Medicine throughout employment. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fellowship training in Sports Medicine
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in complex ambulatory health care setting.

  • Must successfully complete and pass a background check and credentialing process before start date and date of hire.
  • To comply with Santa Barbara County Public Health Department Health Officer Order, this position must provide evidence of annual influenza vaccination, or wear a surgical mask while working in patient care areas during the influenza season. 
  • May be required to answer phone calls and respond to campus emergencies outside of regular operating hours.
  • Any HIPAA or FERPA violation is subject to disciplinary action. 
  • Student Health is closed between the Christmas and New Year's Day holidays. 

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

  •  Sports Medicine and ICA Administrative Duties (20%)
    • As the physician for the Intercollegiate Athletics Program (ICA), provides direct patient care and medical consultation for athletes, and creates and maintains policies to promote health and organizational goals. 
    • Provides medical supervision and treatment for medical emergencies during athletic competitions, including not only for UCSB team and staff members, but also emergency care for visiting team members, visiting staff, and visitors and guests to the competitions. 
    • Maintains current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the Big West Conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and other associations and agencies governing ICA, at all times to ensure compliance with rules and standards. 
    • Provides medical supervision and consultation for ICA Certified Athletic Trainers, including credentialing, review of quality and documentation, approving treatment protocols and supervision of care delivery. 
    • Member of ICA committees to develop medical policies and provides Medical Supervision of campus "Drug Free Sport" screening program, Concussion Management program, and athlete Cardiac Screening program. 
    • Conducts staff development programs and coordinates with other campus departments to ensure high standards for the medical screening of athletes. 
    • Represents UCSB Sports Medicine at UC and NCAA conferences, and is liaison to the local medical community for collaboration in the care of UCSB athletes.
  •  Clinical (70%)
    • Provides and manages primary care medical care for outpatients at Student Health including diagnosis, treatment, and consultations. Demonstrates the necessary skill sets to work in both the primary care and urgent care settings and provides exceptional care of students with complex medical problems. 
    • Provides professional medical care for outpatients requiring mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, eating disorders and Urgent Care Mental Health Evaluations with Psychiatry backup. 
    • Provides professional medical and minor surgical care for outpatients as qualified. 
    • Manages a broad range of primary care clinical problems in ambulatory medicine including infectious disease, minor trauma, dermatology, sports medicine, sexual health, gynecology, travel medicine, mental health and eating disorders. 
    • Provides direct patient care in a continuity-based primary care model with focus on collaboration, chronic disease management, and prevention in a traditional college health practice. 
    • Maintains medical records in compliance with medical staff rules and regulations and Student Health policies and procedures manual. 
    • Provides consultation for nurses and nurse practitioners practicing under the Standardized Procedures and Protocols and Medication Furnishing Protocols (including Schedule II-V controlled substances according to their individual authorizations) of UCSB Student Health.
    • Works in collaborative and collegial relationships with nurses and other clinical staff. 
    • When the Primary Supervising Physician is unavailable, acts as the clinical supervisor for Physician Assistants practicing under the Delegation of Services Agreement of UCSB Student Health, co-signing prescriptions and chart notes as legally mandated. 
    • Works in collaborative and collegial relationships with Physician Assistants and other clinical staff. Performs various other clinical or administrative duties as assigned by the Student Health Clinical Management Team.
  • Non-Clinical (10%)
    • Rotating participation with other physicians on important clinical staff committees, such as Medical Quality Improvement and Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committees, which determine overall Student Health clinical policies, and provide peer review and risk management activities to maximize quality care delivery and minimize risk for the University General Administrative Time for medical record completion, committee work preparation, specialty clinic assignments, policy and procedure creations, treatment guideline reviews, QI project participation, etc. Subject to change due to clinic demands as determined by Clinical Management Team. 
    • May conduct training sessions in continuing education for all Physicians, Physician Assistants and Nurses assigned to the professional staff, keeping them abreast of new treatments and developments within their field.
