Job Summary

The Ultrasound Technologist competently performs routine and specialized ultrasound exams of varied complexity to produce quality images for physicians and other health care providers to diagnose, treat, and monitor disease processes. Works independently, exercising sound judgment, and executing developed clinical skills on challenging diagnostic procedures and situations to deliver accurate results in a timely manner. Work routines are guided by established procedures and protocols; quality of work performed is approved or reviewed by the shift supervisor, principal ultrasound technologist, manager, or appropriate radiologist.

Position rotates scanning locations to include Davis Tower, ACC and PCN satellite facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) in Abdomen and/or OBGYN
  • American Heart Association (AHA) CPR or UC Davis Health CPR certification
  • Extensive experience/understanding of complex fetal anomalies and their associated disease processes and maternal disorder.
  • Capably demonstrates the knowledge and ability to operate ultrasound equipment in order to produce a quality product
  • Must be able to adapt to new programs and equipment upgrades as radiological field advances.
  • Analytical skills necessary to perform non-routine, complex ultrasound studies.
  • Physical ability to capably perform all functions of a staff sonographer.
  • Demonstrate ability to recognize normal human anatomy, certain pathological conditions, and the ability to utilize ultrasound equipment to differentiate disease processes and artifacts.
  • Skill to organize workload by priority to produce a sufficient volume of work in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills; documents and reports clearly and concisely. Conveys instructions, explanations, directions and information appropriately.
  • Must effectively read, write and verbally communicate in the English language.
  • Demonstrates an ability to express self in all areas of communication (verbal, written, nonverbal); utilizes effective listening and questioning techniques.
  • Superior telephone, communication, and Interpersonal skills to interact effectively and positively with people.
  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology and congenital/acquired pathology as they relate to the use and interpretation of ultrasound diagnostic procedures.
  • Knowledge of principles of ultrasound physics, and the propagation of ultrasound through tissues.
  • Ability to display common sense and good judgment in following rules, protocols, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of hospital and departmental policies and procedures sufficient to effectively perform job functions or refer to others.
  • Knowledge of standard keyboard, ability to input/retrieve data accurately and to observe applicable Radiology Information System (RIS) and Information Services (IS) access codes, security and patient privacy.

Department Description

The Department of Radiology is a 24-hour, seven day a week operation providing Imaging Services to adult and pediatric inpatient and outpatients. The Ultrasound section of Radiology performs a variety of diagnostic ultrasound exams and interventional procedures for diagnosis and treatment of disease processes.

Special Requirements

  • Must be able to work variable hours, alternate shifts, and occasional overtime to provide coverage as needed for sick leave, staffing shortages, etc.
    Must be able to rotate on-call for evening, weekend, and holiday coverage per departmental staffing guidelines.
    Must be able to travel to other UCD imaging facilities.
    Must adhere to UC Policies and guidelines:
  • No smoking, eating or drinking allowed in work area.
  • Must keep work area clean and free of debris.
  • TB test, current CPR required annually per JCAHO requirements.
  • This position is a critical position and subject to a background check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background investigation including criminal history and identity checks.
  • As a condition of employment, you will be required to comply with the University of California Policy on Vaccination Programs, as may be amended or revised from time to time.  Federal, state, or local public health directives may impose additional requirements.
