Full Salary Range: Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $82,300 - $151,700/yr. The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $82,300 - $98,000/yr.

Department Marketing Statement
Established in 1989, the Department of Statistics and Applied Probability (PSTAT) has a diverse community of students and scholars actively engaged in education and research. The faculty of the department are actively involved in interdisciplinary research spanning Financial Mathematics, Data Science, Actuarial Science, Theoretical Statistics, Applied Probability, Applied Statistics, and Biostatistics. The department is home to the UCSB Center for Financial Mathematics and Actuarial Research, an interdisciplinary research center providing leadership in quantitative finance. The department has over 3,000 undergraduate and approximately 100 graduate students; students in the department take advantage of robust research opportunities with individual faculty members.

Brief Summary of Job Duties
Under the direction of the LSIT Director of Information Infrastructure, with additional guidance provided by the PSTAT Department Chair and Business Officer, the System Admin manages all services and systems supporting research, instruction, and administrative functions for the PSTAT, while coordinating with UCSB's College of Letters & Science IT unit (LSIT) in its role of supporting common operational and technical resources. The System Admin divides their time between 1) maintaining high availability of the PSTAT Department's research computers and labs and 2) managing and monitoring hardware and virtual machine research servers: Software installation/upgrades, health monitoring, user management, recovery, etc. 3) Coordinate with other IT organizations on campus to set up, configure, maintain, upgrade, and manage department compute resources 4) Provide consulting and develop custom computing solutions for research and instruction and 5) Maintain documentation and provide hands-on labs to inform the department on effective use of department research computing resources.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
- Five years as a Linux Systems Administrator/Engineer Required or
- Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.
- A thorough knowledge of Linux operating systems, network architecture, and Linux shell scripting is expected. Working knowledge with at least one systems programming language (C, C++, Python, R, etc.).
- Experience with system and network debugging is expected.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated success at learning and evaluating new technologies and the ability to determine if appropriate for adoption.
- Able to work effectively on team with a collaborative approach to teamwork, and independent projects with the ability to self-direct and adjust to shifts in priorities.
- Advanced troubleshooting skills are preferred. Excellent customer service ethic.
- Effective communication skills.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:
Server Support - 50%
Responsible for maintaining the department's VMware cluster infrastructure as well as the department's physical and virtual servers at optimum level to fully support the complex research activities of the faculty and graduate students. This includes installing, staging, testing, configuring, enhancing and supporting the Linux, Unix and Windows based computational applications and productivity tools on PSTAT departmental servers: MATLAB, SAS, Mathematica, R, Python, C++, FORTRAN and other utilities. Coordinates data warehousing and RAID services.
Maintains the performance and reliability of research computational environments on the Linux, Unix, MacOS and Windows desktop workstations.
Responsible for configuring and managing network services to department research clusters, including designing and implementing network security, intrusion detection and incident response; designing, implementing and maintaining a backup strategy to ensure data integrity of servers and desktop workstations.
Coordinates provisioning of cloud computing services and credits (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure) to department researchers. Coordinates with LSIT, ETS, CNSI/MRL, Campus Office of Software Licensing and other campus research computing resources.
Coordinates the server-relevant portion of the annual IUC funding request and budget management for hardware and licensing needs.
Designs and coordinates the PSTAT research computing environment. Working with PSTAT Computing Liaison, Business Officer and Chair, establishes goals and priorities for the PSTAT clusters and virtual computing environments. Gathers and documents user and system requirements, and translates them into proper system specifications and procedures. Analyzes system requirements from cost, development, deployment, capacity, flexibility and support perspectives, encompassing hardware, virtualization and cloud computing aspects. Recommends preferred solutions, justifying the selection, researches vendors and serves as the primary contact for IT vendors. Develops and executes test plans for new systems and applications, including developing test data sets.

Performs security control activities to prevent unauthorized access to networked resources.
Research Support - 50%
Research assistance: provisions virtual computing resources, installs software, debugs installations, and implements data management plans. Assists researchers in optimization of virtual systems, provides high-level instruction in tool usage and long-term data management. Coordinates purchasing of new research workstations.
Sets up secure research environments for faculty and student capstone/research projects, such as PSTAT 196, 197BC and 296. These secure research environments include support for ePHI data.
Coordinates with LSIT the deployment of remote computing environments such as JupyterHub on behalf of the instructors. Collects data from teachers on course needs, creates and maintains custom configurations. Develops and improves deployment workflow as new open-source solutions become available.
Works directly with department members, researchers and graduate students. Assists new users with system integration. Gives technical advice to departmental researchers and Computing Liaison on creating and provisioning research computing environments, including a yearly group orientation to all new users.
