Position Description The Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing at The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) seeks to fill a clinical Professor of Instruction position in Speech Language Pathology. This position requires eligibility for licensure as a speech-language pathologist in the state of Texas, certification by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (CCC-SLP), and the ability to provide clinical supervision in adult neurogenic disorders. Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate and graduate level courses within the successful applicants' discipline in addition to clinical instructional responsibilities. Applicants with the ability to teach in adult neurogenic disorders, dysphagia, stuttering, and/or anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing, are encouraged. Professors of Instruction also advise MS students, serve on program, department, school, and university committees, participate in student development activities, and perform administrative duties as appropriate. Teaching load, practicum responsibilities, and other duties are assigned based on needs determined by the appropriate Program Head, Department Chair, and Dean. Professor of Instruction is a full-time 9-month, non-tenure-track position with opportunity for summer salary. The appointments will commence for the fall 2024 semester. Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience: A doctoral degree in Communication Sciences or a related field (e.g., Speech, Language and Hearing, Communication Disorders, Linguistics, Phonetics), clinical credentials, eligibility for licensure as a Speech-Language Pathologist in the state of Texas, and previous clinical supervision experience are required prior to employment. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, engaging, and dynamic environment comprised of individuals with a range of backgrounds, skills, and perspectives. We are seeking candidates able to enhance the program and the discipline, and able to deliver high quality teaching using evidence-based practices to effectively engage students from a range of backgrounds and experiences. Preferred Education and Experience: Demonstrated ability to teach in adult neurogenic disorders, dysphagia, stuttering, and/or anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing is preferred. Demonstrated ability to teach a variety of core, advanced and elective undergraduate courses is preferred. Candidates seeking Associate Professor of Instruction or Full Professor of Instruction appointments should have experience and qualifications commensurate with those positions.
The Department/Program/School The UT Dallas Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing is home to a thriving undergraduate program with multiple tracks that support students with diverse career interests, highly regarded clinical education programs in both Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology, and a robust PhD program. Faculty teach undergraduate and graduate level courses within their discipline and area of expertise. The UT Dallas Master of Science program in Speech-Language Pathology is one of the largest in the United States and is housed within state-of-art facilities located at the UT Dallas Callier Center for Communication Disorders. The Callier Center houses clinical education suites and individual and core laboratories in addition to its comprehensive clinical facilities. Co-localization of clinical and research facilities with clinical education suites at the Callier Center enhances opportunities for clinical and translational research efforts. Callier Center clinicians evaluate and provide treatment to more than 4,000 children and adults, with more than 20,000 patient visits annually. Clinical and translational research programs in speech, language, and hearing disciplines are additionally facilitated by the new UT Dallas Clinical Trial Unit housed at the Callier Clinical Research Center and access to the UT Dallas Sammons BrainHealth Imaging Center. SLH faculty have opportunities for vibrant interdisciplinary collaborations with UT Dallas Centers including the Center for Vital Longevity, Center for BrainHealth, Center for Children and Families, Texas Biomedical Device Center, and Center for Advanced Pain Studies, as well as the UT Dallas Bioengineering and Electrical Engineering programs and the UT Southwestern Medical Center. The Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing is housed within the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, also home to the Department of Psychology and Department of Neuroscience. - Mentor and/or advise undergraduate and/or graduate students;
- Engage in service within the academic unit, the university, and the profession as appropriate based on teaching and research constraints;
- Clinical supervision and clinical advising; supervised teaching is reduced commensurate with other duties;
- Teach eight (8) of classes each academic year.
Additional Information
The Masters degree (MS) program in speech language pathology (SLP) is ranked among the top ten SLP MS programs in the United States (US). It is the largest program in the US, with approximately 200 students enrolled on an ongoing basis and students admitted in the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms. Other programs in the US are primarily limited to Fall admissions, and typically admit on the order of 20-40 students. The SLP MS program has had a long-standing reliance on part-time lecturers (COMD 7208 Pediatric Dysphagia, COMD 7204 Craniofacial Disorders, COMD 7324 Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury, COMD 7384 Augmentative Communication, COMD 6320 Motor Speech Disorders). With the retirement of Ms. Jan Lougeay, COMD 6222 Stuttering is now taught by part-time lecturer and with the retirement of Dr. Bill Katz, COMD 6305 Speech Science has also been required to be taught by a part-time lecturer. The recent resignation of Dr. Lisa Goffman further impacts the program with the loss of COMD 7v82 Special Topics in Comm Dis – Speech Sound Disorders in Children from Articulation to Phonology, an elective course that provided an important child language option within the SLP MS curriculum. Failure to fill two tenure-stream positions in Speech Science and Language Science last year and loss of two additional faculty with SLP MS teaching commitments in combination with growth of the undergraduate curriculum and growth of the PhD curriculum means that even if currently approved and posted tenure-track positions are successfully filled this year, there will still be unmet teaching and clinical supervision needs. There are urgent needs for practicum coverage in the area of preverbal education and adult neurogenic disorders. The instructor will be assigned to teach required courses that are currently taught by part-time lecturers, elective courses that are unable to be offered at this time due to faculty retirement or attrition, and they will be assigned other courses as needed to best align the expertise of the faculty with the needs of the program. The new Professor of Instruction will be asked to provide supervision of graduate students enrolled in Clinical Practicum (COMD 6330), will provide clinical advising, and will serve on Program, Department, School, and University committees.
