Description

This position is in the Biological Sciences Department (BSD), School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM). The incumbent will provide administrative support to faculty, staff and students.

This position involves highly skilled and technical work involving the maintenance of specialized equipment relating to scientific and research activities. This position is also responsible for the design, development, fabrication, purchase, and maintenance of electronic and mechanical equipment, hardware, materials, and systems experimental research in the biology laboratory. The incumbent is responsible for managing the design, construction, testing and documentation for engineering systems within the department of Biological Sciences while providing expertise and experience to principal investigators (PI's) and instructors in the maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school graduation or GED, supplemented by technical training in areas related to the specific research activity, college-level courses in physics, electrical engineering, & related disciplines, or completion of associate degree in electronics; 8 yrs exp in the skilled construction, operation & maintenance of sophisticated electronic equipment, including 3 yrs of exp in scientific research & field operations in the particular branch of technology or science involved; or any equivalent combination of education or exp.



Preferred Education and Experience

  • More than the required experience above preferred. 
  • Experience with specialized scientific equipment. 
  • Prior experience working in a University environment with specialized scientific equipment.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

70% Building, Equipment Repair and Maintenance: maintains computer systems (Mac's), research and teaching lab equipment, building vacuum and compressed Air, kitchen equipment, water purification systems, cold/warm room maintenance, minus 80 freezer monitoring and set up. Specifies and recommends equipment, systems, components and materials for use.

15% Inventory: maintain unit wide capital and mobile assets inventory. Plans, conducts, and documents tests for assemblies and sub-assemblies to verify that scientific, performance, and integration requirements are met. Surplus old equipment.

10% Departmental Support: building access, system lists management, purchasing, lab start up and close outs of equipment inventory, transfers, and maintenance.

5% Other duties as assigned: tracks and maintains records, systems, procedures, and manual for the operations of systems as build and test records for configurations. This position is considered essential.
