Description

Reporting to the Inaugural Dean for the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, the Executive Director of Strategic Communications and Marketing will initiate, manage, analyze and refine the communications and marketing strategy for the first and only professional School of Music within the University of California, and its constituents, including donors, students, media, the music industry, and the community in a manner that strategically builds and enhances the school's brand, builds strong online communities for the school, and supports initiatives related to enrollment management and institutional advancement.
 
Major duties include the leadership, creation, implementation, evaluation and assessment of strategies, programs and cross-platform materials to effectively communicate the mission of the School and its three departments (Music, Ethnomusicology, and Musicology), an interdepartmental program (Global Jazz Studies), and various institutes to targeted constituencies. S/he will work in close collaboration with the Inaugural Dean, the Executive Director of Development and the Associate Director of Admissions, faculty and other university leaders to strategically further the School's communications, admissions, development, and public relations impact and initiatives against established goals and benchmarking metrics.  

Qualifications

  Demonstrated working knowledge of the principles and practices of journalism and communications. Required   Demonstrated understanding of and skill in developing complex communication and marketing programs as well as branding campaigns. Ability to think strategically and conceptualize and implement related short- and long-term goals and priorities. Required   Exemplary research, analytical and writing skills to compose press releases, stories, editorials, analyses, speeches, position papers, reports, scripts, brochures, web site content and other publications. Required   Extensive media contacts at key ethnic, California and national media, and ability to work with journalists at all skill levels, including student journalists. Required   Demonstrated ability to identify story placement opportunities and think strategically about communications. Required   Ability to communicate in a professional manner with people from various socioeconomic, cultural and professional backgrounds and to interact diplomatically with the public in a high volume, continuous public contact setting. Required   Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, faculty, students and other individuals and departments, including senior campus leadership, faculty, media relations and communications colleagues, and UC Office of the President staff. Required   Demonstrated knowledge of news media operations and protocols, especially the news gathering process. Required   Demonstrated ability to successfully coordinate multiple ongoing tasks and responsibilities of varying degrees of complexity simultaneously. Required   Strong knowledge of ADA compliance requirements for all media content Required   Demonstrated ability to meet strict deadlines and respond effectively to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment. Required   Demonstrated experience with web and television technology. Required   Demonstrated record of implementing new technologies and new communications tools, including social media. Required   Thorough knowledge and understanding of current events, issues and developments in music. Required   Knowledge of other issues facing publicly-assisted institutions of higher education. Required   Ability to work independently and set priorities while exercising flexibility, initiative and self-motivation. Required   Ability to work nights and weekends, when needed. Required   Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education. Required   Ability to initiate innovative communication strategies to address specific issues or problems. Required   Demonstrated leadership ability.   Required    Ability to recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate staff. Required   Working knowledge of University resources to locate needed information and services. Preferred   Skill in making oral presentations. Required
