Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Nuclear Science Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will be under the direction of principal investigators in the Applied Nuclear Physics Program (ANP), engaging in innovative, applied research as part of a team of physicists and engineers working on the development of novel systems and algorithms for radiation detection and imaging.


What You Will Do:

  • Conduct original research into new systems, analysis methodologies, and algorithms for radiation detection, imaging, and mapping.
  • Analyze data from scintillator and semiconductor radiation detectors.
  • Participate in the development of advanced data fusion methodologies.
  • Publish papers/reports in refereed journals.
  • Present research findings at seminars and conferences.
  • Report results to supervisor.


Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Contribute to other group activities related to advanced radiation detection concepts.
  • Familiarity with ROS and Linux.
  • Interest in multi-sensor package development to integrate sensors with board computers.


What is Required:

  • Recent PhD in physics, nuclear engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in radiation detection and/or gamma-ray or neutron imaging.
  • Demonstrated outstanding data analysis skills and proficiency in C/C++ and/or Python.
  • Experience of algorithm development, signal processing, or statistical analysis.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • A demonstrated ability to perform research individually and as part of a group.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with machine learning techniques and/or statistical analysis.
  • Experience of analyzing data from sensors including video and LIDAR.



  • This is a full-time 2 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 2 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
