Job Description
The Chief Data Officer (CDO) will help define and lead the strategy for data, governance, and analytics for BAE Systems Inc. This role is a blend of consultant to the business and functional delivery on data management, analytics strategy, and the operational delivery of tools, processes, and governance. This is a new role within BAE Systems, Inc., and an exciting opportunity to influence and develop this function. Using industry knowledge and best practice, this initial work will include developing CONOPs, structure and roles and responsibilities for the function. This role reports to the CIO of BAE Systems Inc and will work with BAE Systems Inc Sector customers and Inc Functional leads to drive the enterprise data strategy across BAE Systems, Inc. Partnering with the BAE Systems, plc CDO, the BAE Systems, Inc. CDO oversees enterprise data quality and supports the business sectors in driving consequential business value from data insights across the $11B portfolio.

  • Defines data and analytics strategy practices in partnership with the Inc Digital Strategy. Leads the corporation in driving programs that enable the exploitation of strategic and tactical business opportunities through the use of data.
  • Works with Business and Functional Senior Leadership to establish the vision for managing data as a business asset and to leverage research analytics to maximize the return on all investment. Expands the organization's research and analytics offerings, especially in emerging analytical approaches focusing on digital business innovation.
  • Assist Sector Business leaders with consultation, research, and strategy creation for their development of new data products or services to expand markets, monetize data (directly and indirectly) and grow company revenue, drive improved manufacturing performance, and reduce risk.
  • Lead regulatory and compliance programs related to data and analytics assets responsible for ensuring security, legal, privacy and policy compliance. Chair the data governance Council to provide Executive sponsorship and oversight of governance policy and compliance.
  • Consult with IT on the development, publishing and maintenance of the organization's information architecture and master data management and support the adoption of the architecture and data management across the organization.
  • Foster the creation of a data-driven culture, related competencies, and data literacy across the enterprise. This will include but not be limited to the development of training, communication, standards, and validation.
  • Work with IT to ensure the proper integration and staging of data, and the development and maintenance of the data lakes, data warehouse and data marts, for use by analysts throughout the organization.
  • Support the SVP, Strategy and Corporate Development with the refinement of the Inc Digital Strategy. Ensure the data strategy and the Digital Strategy are complementary.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills
Qualifications
  • 10+ years of total experience working in data quality and data management as well as business intelligence. Direct experience leading data governance, data stewardship, and data conversion programs.
  • Has been part of leading a successful data management strategy throughout an organization. Knowledgeable implementing and driving effective data policy and data management initiatives along with implementing world class data quality best practices. Experience addressing Data compliance and security in relation to industry.
  • Experience or deep familiarity with concepts such as data modeling, data profiling, data architecture, data governance, business Intelligence, advanced Analytics, AI/ML, RPA, and other enabling capabilities leveraging the firm's data assets.
  • Understanding of Master Data Management and Metadata Management, including using a Data Catalog.
  • Technology-savvy with a broad understanding of available cloud-based data and analytics technologies that can be used to support a data-driven organization's goals and objectives.
  • Direct experience leading data governance, data stewardship, and data conversion programs within a highly regulated industry such as Aerospace & Defense, healthcare, telco, or financial services with a company of at least $1B in revenue. Ideally has experience working in defense.
  • Strong ability to collaborate, influence, negotiate, shape, gain commitment to action, and be decisive at all levels. Strong communication skills with experience leading effectively in a matrix organization and collaborating with other departments to work toward a common mission.
  • Proven ability to establish direction, implement a vision, and outline appropriate strategies that support the overall business objectives. Is considered a trusted partner and has built and effectively sustained the relationships with the business leaders.
  • Strong executive presence and excellent written and oral communication skills with experience presenting to C- level executives and customers.
  • Experience creating and deploying business processes and procedures across an organization. Project Management experience is ideal.
  • Proven experience developing a data strategy that enables the business to better leverage information to create value and drive revenue.
Education:
  • A Bachelor's degree is required

  • 15+ years of total experience working in data quality and data management as well as business intelligence. Direct experience leading data governance, data stewardship, and data conversion programs.
  • Has successfully led a data management strategy throughout an organization. Has experience implementing and driving effective data policy and data management initiatives along with implementing world class data quality best practices.
  • Direct experience leading data governance, data stewardship, and data conversion programs within the defense industry.
  • Has at least 8 years of complex project management experience.
Education:
  • MBA or relevant master's degree is strongly preferred
